I went ahead and brought the Peavey bass downstairs and tuned it up and plugged it in. It sounds and plays pretty good, and the ground hum that it has isn't as bad as I originally thought it was, especially when playing it. I noticed when I touched the control panel between the knobs, that quieted it right up. I wonder if there's something I can do to fix that, or is it something that I'd have to have sent for repairs?

Anyway, I played it for a while, but then since I found it a little fatiguing, since I didn't have a strap on to balance some of the weight (it's on the heavy side, compared to my other basses) and it's also a long scale with rounds on it, which I'm not exactly used to from play with short scale basses with flats for the past couple years, I went over to my violin bass, and have been playing that for the rest of the evening. Besides figuring out what to do with that hum issue, I think a set of light gauge flats would be a nice addition to that bass. It does have a beefy tone to it, probably because of the additional weight, and it also has a P and J pickup configuration.

It sure sounds like a ground wire that isn't too well attached right under the control cavity. Some basses just use a screw to attach it to aground. Usually easy to fix without a service visit. There's nothing wrong with a ground secured that way either.

So, should I just unscrew the control plate and look to see if something isn't secure on there? What would I typically be looking for in the first place?

You'll want to look for a loose connection. The green wire is your ground wire. I'd check that one first.

OK, good to know. I left that bass downstairs so I can mess with it later, and open it up. If I brought it back upstairs, I'd probably wind up ignoring it again for awhile. :P

ImageImageImage That sounds like if something goes into the spare bedroom at my place. Out of sight, out of mind!

Yeah, then you wind up forgetting about it, and you find it again 15 years later. :P

Works that way for me too. I have a spot to put things to work on later. When it starts to overflow, I'll start working on some of it.

The procrastination pile, because you should work on something, but you really don't want to. :P

It takes years to get to master that. Where did I put that to work on area, anyway?

Try the most random place you can think of, and most likely, it will be there. That's how that often works. :P
