It does look nice paired with that kind of finish, I think.

I do like the Black Moto PG / Maple / Buttercream on the Player Jazz though. Image

I have to say, that the Buttercream is probably my favorite finish of that series, especially with the maple board. By the way, they've put out a Silver and Capri Orange finish for the series now. I don't think they have maple boards, though.

I know, they have a limited combination of finishes, and fretboards. That was one thing I liked about the Am. Std. Series basses, more options to choose from.

Well, it does seem like they've offered a lot more options than a lot of times in the past. I remember sometimes, you'd just get white, black, sunburst, and maybe red, or variations of those colors (Olympic White, Candy Apple Red, etc.) for the most part. It's pretty much still like that for the Squier models, but I suppose they do that because of the price point.

That pretty much covers the options that were available. At least in most cases, for most finishes at least, there was the option of Maple, or Rosewood fretboards.

I agree with you guys. That is a beautiful color combination. Maple fingerboards are my favorite as well.

The Maple just has a nice look to it, whether it augments the playing tones, or not.

I agree. My ears are not sensitive enough to tell maple from ebony or rosewood. I do love the look and fell of maple though. My ebony LP is a close second.

I agree with both of you. Nice axe.

I owned a beautiful player. A 2011 Tungsten Amn. Deluxe with a rosewood fretboard. It was just under 8 lbs. too. I like rosewood as well, and there was a definite difference in tone (not better IMHO, just deeper) than my present 3TSB with maple as seen on the left. I’ve owned grey cars; but, thankfully, no dark brown seats which to me would shout no no. Chamois leather, maybe. If that tungsten Strat came with a maple neck it might not have left my hands. True, 3TSB isn’t as rare as Tungsten, but there appears to be less maple necks in that combo. On the 3TSB I think both rosewood and maple look great. Not sure if the ebony would look good on the 3TSB as it does on the Taylor. Maple on the Sitka spruce (tone aside) might look good, But, gosh darn, I wish my Strat maple was Bird’s Eye.
The ‘62 Daphne Blue Strat I was smitten with as a teen, had a Brazilian rosewood fretboard. Quite a difference in feel, looks, and questionably tone from today. I never saw one like it with a maple neck as they were special orders if available at all in the early 60s.

That said, some colour combos just have that perfect relationship.

Tip: Fashion, home furnishings, paint, set designs I’ve worked with, and design in general, Fender for sure, have a history of looking to the automotive industry for trends. That’s probably less so today as the automotive industry has wimped out and cut costs in monochrome or repeated colours today. Still, if you see a car you like, the combo is probably a good match. I painted a guest room a similar colour scheme (pale forest green and light tan) that was used for a classic Auburn that I couldn’t afford. In the end, however, if you mix and match anything, it may become trendy,

I wonder what became of that '62 Strat you wanted? I imagine if it's still around, and in pretty good shape, it would probably be in the five figure price range these days, since it's pre CBS model, or has that changed? I know the vintage market has changed over the past 10 years or so.

I wonder too, Paul. It belonged to a high school chum of mine who was in a popular local band. He moved on to become a high school principal and a family man. The Strat i’m guessing was taken care of knowing these guys. The lead guitarist turned pro and still plays. Both of them taught me some songs on that Strat and Bandmaster. That’s about it though as I left the city right after I graduated and life changed. The last I saw him was at a 25th reunion. I should have asked him then. I know the original members got together a while back for one of those concerts where they gather the bands of yesteryear for a public event. He was in one of the top 3 bands and they even hit the local charts; but, I can’t say whether he still has the ‘62 since I’ve moved and lost touch with him. Perhaps, he, one of his kids, or the lead player kept it. Not bad for an estimated $600 - $800 Cdn. investment. I cringe when I think of how many of those guitars were passed on before their worth was realized. There’s a possibility I missed out when maybe I could have grabbed it. My practice would have changed for the better, sad to say.
There’s also the chance it’s seen better days. I sure hope not. A Daphne Blue ‘62 Stratocaster isn’t as common as a 1962 Fiesta Red AFAIK or others. Sometimes, the players will be worn and the possible sunburst underneath will reveal itself having a stock paint job over top because of a flawed paint job or demand for more of a particular model colour. I have a friend who worked with me here in town and he has a good size collection of guitars and amps. Amongst them he has a 1961 sunburst Strat. It’s seen some heavy work, and has yet to be appraised as there are some mods and questions still pending,

As far as those old Strats in good shape, their colour, their rosewood, and their tone, pictures don’t do them justice. Some modern Strats definitely play better today, and some are finished off better, just like cars of today - some good some bad. Less inconsistency and more durable finish, etc., and yet uniqueness has it’s place.

I do think, however, with a 50s or 60s Strat, Tele, and others you can’t compare their mojo with a new model versus those classics. Ask anyone who has held one, played one, or had one. I think they would agree. It’s the same with a PITA well used vintage amp that might need a makeover. I think the guitar gods in Rock and Roll heaven planned it that way.
YMMV

FSB

On the other hand, would I like to have a ‘57 Chevy Nomad? You betcha. A new version? You betcha. Three years ago I passed up a limited ‘62 Daphne repro. A lot less than 5 big ones. What was I thinking? Bad timing again. Phht! :?

I've come across a few instruments like that, albeit not a '62 Strat, but something that I thought was the coolest thing I'd played, but for whatever reason couldn't or didn't buy it, and there wasn't another chance. I suppose it's just something that wasn't meant to be, and who knows if you did have it, it would have even wound up living to certain expectations down the road. You know how fickle GAS can be.

Ya got that right. An inexpensive plain Jane guitar in the hands of a master guitarist can sound amazing. That’s my problem. There is a cutoff point for me when it becomes lovely to hold, but it won’t play to my expectations in my mitts. I’ve held a Guarneri violin that was very old, not pristine, but very beautiful in fit, finish, and sound. In my hands it was all of those things except sound. But, in the hands of Winnipeg’s Symphony's first violinist and concert master it was amazing.

I’m not a jealous person by any means. I see no point in that and find jealousy an odd emotion and no point. I do have envy and admiration though. I can appreciate the finer things in life and the work that it took to get something to that level. There’s some emotion when I see a beautiful yacht leased or owned by someone who can’t even run an outboard. Then there are the weekend sailors who spend the weekend tied up to the dock while I would be sailing her. In fact, having someone other than yourself put the gear into action is typical. That’s how I got to work 100 footers. With a $5000 guitar that guy tied up to the dock would be me since others could take that axe to a different level. That ownership would be okay, fun I suppose, but it would be almost sinful. IMHO.

I find some guitars, at any cost, may have value, but to me they might still be bone ugly, and not to my liking. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, and one man’s treasure is, conversely, another man’s junk.

As for the ‘62 and others, I think I could get over the sticker shock knowing that (originally) it’s an under $1000 guitar. :P Again, the reverse is true so finding $5000 in value might make me sweat a little.

When I think of it, yes the cost for the ‘62 when new was a fair chunk of change back then; but, it wasn’t the price that gave it Mojo. It was the character and beauty. Definitely worth it. IMHO.

FSB

Factoid:
The Strat in ‘62 would approximately cost you between 1/4 and 1/3 the price of an average new car ($2,500). Today that $5000 vintage Strat would do the same with a small car (app. $20,000). Today’s equal Strat at today’s prices? Would it be 1/4 to 1/3 the price of a 2019 average car? (app. $35,000) Not even close.

I'm still liking the Fender Player Series Jazz bass. Definitely a fine series to replace the Standard Series. Image
