I decided to go back to my Douglas violin bass today. It's been awhile since I've played it, and since I'm going to watch a Beatles movie, it sort of goes with the scheme of things.

Ha Ha, very cool. An excellent choice, for both the bass, and the movie. A few months ago, TMC on cable played, "A Hard Day's Night". So,....... I recorded it. It had been some time since I saw it. I absolutely love them performing, "She Loves You", as the finally song in the movie.

Yeah, I have that recorded, as well. They played it on Turner Classic Movies. I also have it on some YouTube type site that I have in my links. I watched "Let It Be."

By the way, I had to adjust the truss rod on the violin bass, because the neck was a bit too bowed, making the action a bit too high. I had too tighten it last year because of the winter, making it buzz too much on the 1st frets, but now the weather changed and it just wound up getting the action too high. That bass is pretty susceptible to the climate around here. Maybe because it's pretty much like an acoustic instrument, with it's wooden bridge and all of that. I think that's why I've been favoring the Ibanez more. It's a lot more neck stable, and it has louder pickups.

I can see where the Ibanez would be a bit more stable, and less prone to being affected by weather changes.

Yeah, I did have to adjust the neck on it one time over the winter, though. Other than that, it's been fine.

Do you keep either of the two in cases?

No, but I do have a soft case that will fit either of them for when I do a gig.

Soft cases are good.

It does the job to carry it from point A to point B. Actually, the case was intended for a Jazzmaster guitar, from what I understand. It fits both basses, though.

That works out well. Do you have anything to offer a bit of protection from the weather, when they're just sitting at home though?

No, not really. I don't have any humidifiers or anything like that. I did put some of this: https://www.howardproducts.com/product/ ... nditioner/ on the fretboards that I had to file the fret ends down on, and maybe that will help. It certainly got rid of any sanding marks that I may have gotten on there, and shined up the boards. We had the stuff around because of the wooden table in the kitchen, so that's what I used. I let it sit overnight and buffed it out the next day.

That product sounds pretty good.

It does seem to work well. I don't think that's what they had in mind when they made it, but it's what was around the house, so why not give it a try? Rosewood does seem to shrink in cold, dry environments, and this stuff is supposed to help correct that. I know it does fix up any scuff marks from when I filed. I did use blue painter's tape on the fretboard (which was a pain in the arse to do, by the way, but I did it,) but it still got a little marked up from the file going through the tape.

That was a good thing you didn't overdo the filing on the frets. Rosewood is nice, and the AC Jazz I had did have a decent one. But Maple has been my favorite fretboard wood for some time now.

I think if I ever get another bass, I'd want one with a maple board, as well, if possible. I've always liked the look of them, but for some reason, there aren't too many around at certain price ranges, or just in general. It seems the ratio has always been lower for them as compared to rosewood, or now it's alternatives.

I liked Maple, ever since I saw Jimi Hendrix's Olympic White Strat with a Maple fretboard.
