Since you mentioned the Eko Viola Bass I remember reading an interview with Les Claypool talking about how Fat Dog at Subway Guitars in Berkley bought out the Eko factory and was assembling viola basses from the leftover stock. I just checked out the website for the shop but didn't see any.

Just thought I'd give you a possible heads up.

Thanks. Very interesting about the EKO basses. They really were a well made bass from the 60's.

Speaking of Eko, this site here has a lot of info about them, as well as other Italian and other brands. http://www.fetishguitars.com/eko/

My 1969 EKO was a 995, if I remember right. A fine bass.

I remember seeing a green one in my usual music shop when I started playing bass. I only spotted it one time (it must have sold very quickly,) and for some reason I didn't check it out, which was odd, since I had GAS'ed for a hollow body bass since that time.

Too bad you didn't give it a spin. You may have liked it. They really were a top flight bass.

Hey, Glenn, Paul, anyone. I've been thinking about picking up a bass and I've got this nice, empty Strat/Tele case. Do you think a short scale would fit?

It depends. It might be too short for a short scale bass. Although, I did manage to fit my violin bass in a soft shell (not gig bag) case that was sized to fit a Jazzmaster, I think. You could measure the space inside it and see how much room it has.

Measuring sounds like the safest way to go. Thanks, Paul.

Usually even a short scale bass has a bit too much length to fit. Strat, or Tele gig bags usually are to short for a bass. Sometimes the tuning keys are to cumbersome in a guitar gig bag. Not even thinking about a case.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. I'll be doing some research. I probably shouldn't be looking for a bass to fit my case but one I really like. That's a whole new ballgame for me as I have no bass experience. :)

Sorry, Paul and Glenn couldn’t help ya, Marky. These two fine bass players and outstanding Lizards are usually great resources to rely upon; but don’t fret. I think I have the answer.

You could try sawing an inch off the bottom, whittling a quarter inch off the head which you then bend back like a Gibby, crimp the tuning keys, file down the sides, and lightly sand the back. Don’t forget to change the pickguard like Glenn’s. Now add some shorter ukulele strings (Ask Paul. He has a lot of string change setup experience. I can’t help ya as to whether uke’s have both flat and rounds).

Last of all, stick an Acme label over the stock decal. With the blemish on your leftover case you’ll have that one of a kind super duper rawkin’ Custom road worn look.

If that still doesn’t work, you could burn it like Jimi. It might affect the tone though, The beauty of this dumb a** solution is that it will certainly be different, and it will make a Great Wall hanging. Case closed.

No thanks needed, Marky. Glad to be of help. That’s how we help out in the Forum.

PS: It didn’t happen without the picture.

I'm more apt to use a Remington 12 GA, to make a bass body smaller. Any other way is uncivilized.Image

Even short scale basses mostly have a longer neck than 6 stringers. I've been playing bass long enough, that the neck of a 6 stringer just looks to short.
