I went back to playing the Squier Jazz Bass, earlier today. I plugged it into the Fender Rumble 350 combo, and messed around for about an hour. I have to say, after being used to, and playing on short scale basses for about a year, that was a bit of a stretch on the arm, playing sitting down, since I'm now used to the headstock being closer to the body. Other than that, it does play rather well, and sounds pretty good. Now I'm playing the Ibanez short scale in comparison through the Fender, to see what I like better. The jury is still out on that one.

Well, I hate to say the Ibanez feels quicker in the hands, but it is also a short scale neck, which I'm more used to. I've been playing those exclusively for a year or so, now.

Go with the short then. After a year of playing short scales, you'll get a good idea which plays better for you. I went with the long scales after a good bit on short scales. I like stretching a little, it feels good on my fingers.

I suppose I could get used to doing it again, just by wood shedding a bit. The thing is, I also play guitar, which is relatively the same size as a short scale, just a little smaller, so transitioning to and from that does make it a little easier. I don't know, I guess I'll play it by ear. I still would like to get some of those Dunlop flats for the Peavey, and see how that goes. I think that's another thing that the Ibanez has going for it, those Dunlop flats. They are very light and flexible/low tension. Maybe even if I replace the Rotosounds on the Jazz, that could even make a difference with that. Sometimes, that's all you need to do, is just change the strings.

Does Ibanez still ship from the factory with D'Addario strings?

I'm not sure. It probably does. It's a short scale model, if that makes a difference or not if it does. It didn't have the color coded ends like D'Addario usually has, but black silk ends.

I don't know what that set is. If they play well, who cares.

Unfortunately, I've having a hell of a time trying to find Dunlop long scale flats in the .100 to .40 gauge, which is really strange, since the short and medium scale ones I can just get from AMS. Guitar Center and it's affiliates have the .105 to .45 gauge ones, but I don't know how those are going to behave, especially on the Peavey bass. I had that gauge in Rotosounds, and that's where I had issues. Of course, they might not have the same tension that the Rotosounds do, despite the same gauge. I might go ahead and try the Ernie Ball Slinky flats, since they have those available in a light gauge, and they're relatively cheap for flats, at $27. There's also D'Addario flats, but those are even more expensive that Rotosounds, at around $40, which is kind of strange, since their rounds are usually the cheapest priced. I suppose the thing about that, is I probably buy strings once a year, if at all. That's the one thing about flats that you can get away with, usually.

The only thing I can say, I've used the D'addario flats on fretless basses, and they were great!

Yeah, I've definitely used the D'Addario rounds, because they are usually the cheaper brand, or that's what they'd use when they used to have free restringing events in music shops back in the day, which is why I'm surprised that they are more expensive for their flats. They weren't for a long time, but now they are.

D'Addario Flats, and Nylons are very well made. Their price may be higher, but so is their quality.

Speaking of which, I remember a show that I used to watch, called "How It's Made," and they had a segment with them making their strings. I don't get that channel anymore, which it was on, though.

Yeah, I remember that one, too. They even visited the Gibson factory on that one.
