That's true. I suppose there isn't a point in crying over spilled milk, as it were. It's not like any of the things we did get rid of were vastly superior to what we're using now, for the most part. I'd say I have one of the best bass amps that I ever owned, at least sound wise. Time will tell about the rest of it. Sure, I've had better basses that I should have held on to, but then again, with the way my life turned out, I might have lost them in the first place. When I left Florida, I pretty much left everything behind. I didn't plan it that way, it just happened like that. So at least I can say I didn't lose those to that situation.

I really am glad to hear that your amp is a good one for you. I've always leaned towards the amps more, and less of the basses / 6 stringers. When I ran the road crews, I looked after the amps exclusively, and had my assistant take care of drums, and axes.
It worked for us. Everyone had a responsibility, and that gave everyone more than just a false sense of importance. With that everyone was as important as anyone else in the crew.
I still go into a trance almost, when I go into a music store. Right to the amps.

That sounds like a good system. Everyone has a specific area that they concentrated on, and got done at the same time.

Some of that was pick, and choose by the guys. As much as possible anyway. Curiosity worked well too. I let the guys do what they did, and they were actually watching what each other's job entailed. It wasn't too long before they knew each other's job, and damn well too. I did keep a bit of a distant eye on everything going on, and I was pleasantly aware of the excellent workings, and I let them know they were the best on the road.

You and I have something in common with that teamwork approach, Glenn. I’ve had over 40 to a couple on the team with crews from ship to shore, and they worked in a similar fashion.

They were professional and knew the job required, although different. I agree with all of what you said in your post. It seems that what they do works best with delegation rather than with micro managing. That’s how they get better and contribute IMHO. Yes, one has to tell them the rules and lend a hand or advice when needed. That can be a double edge sword when you’ve been the grunt on the way up to end up being in the supervisory and authority position. There are times I’ve wanted to step in, times I’ve held back, times I’ve learned from them, and times I’ve said I’ll accept the learning failure event, show how to get it right, give the expections, and accept nothing less the next time. I also told staff if I thought they were right I’d go to bat for them to the moon and back; but, if I found otherwise, we might have a good talk alone. It’s about respect, knowing some are better at one thing rather than another and having them accept that, even if it may not be where they wanted to go, success comes in many ways; although, I’d encourage them to learn their desire if they had the ability.

I believe some can be left alone, some need direction, and others work well when asked. I think the most difficult thing is pairing up people. What fits for the job doesn’t always fit the personalities. That’s where professionalism comes in, and why and how teams are built. I still see some of the team from way back when, and I was lucky to have had them, and we all appreciate each other.

Golly! That sounds like a band. Well, let’s say some bands.

For this month it has been my Jackson 5 string. I talked to Kurt Wilson over the holidays about a re-fret and a brass nut for my P-Bass and he said yes now I have to see if Fender can help me with getting the brass nut and frets because I'm not seeing them available right now.

Can this help, Rollie? I can see that nut is a tough one to crack on a search. Good luck.

The one advantage I had was none of the crew were part of the band. We were more like an equipment moving contractor, as Roadies for the band. There was usually a time value to deal with. Take down, pack in a semi to get to the airport, then load in the plane. When we got to the next location, second verse, same as the first.

Although man if you look back at the Greatful Dead and the Allman Brothers they viewed their road crews as members of the band and you kinda have to admire that. From what I've read Mickey Hart was hell on drum techs. The quote I remember reading is "Hey man if that cymbal is a half an inch too close I can break a finger."

That loading, unloading, and loading the plane in one night would be quite the workout, that’s for sure.

I can relate second hand, Glenn. My wife’s cousin lit for Harlequin before he moved on for other big name performers traveling the world. One night the family got a call when their short overnight turnaround also involved a loaded truck rollover with him and part of the band’s gear. Someone was watching over them. They pulled through. :D
Our NHL hockey crews would start setup at 8am, often work till 11:30pm, finish tear down and loading at 2am. But, we then hit the sack, hopefully not to start an early morning shift or a callback for real Breaking News. “Kaching!”

I'm going back to the Super Bassman. Old habits die hard! I don't have to move it, so I'm not concerned with it's 65 pounds. I like the Auto Bias System that monitors the tubes, and it's 15 pounds lighter than the equivalent Ampeg SVT CL head. The SVT CL doesn't load to an 8 ohm cab. Not my concern since my cab is a 4 ohm impedance.

I don't miss running a crew at all anymore. It took it's toll on me after a while. I finished doing a tour that was fairly close to home, and my contract was up for renewal. I decided I had enough as Head Roadie, after to many tours, and turned over the road company to my more than capable assistant. The transition went well. That was the last time I moved anyone else's equipment.

I hear you, Glenn. I finished as a CrewChief with some Directing included, as the crews and work were replaced with technology, informative news type programming, and monopoly buyouts.

I know the feeling you had working in the crew environment. With both good and bad, there’s some kind of aura that surrounds it. Rewarding for sure, and the relationships are built not a given. It took me awhile to leave it behind, but once I got to enjoy the finer things that I had sacrificed, and having the chance to catch up on missed time with Mrs. FSB, I became a happy camper. I was approached for a good job in film, but then I found getting off the road was enjoyable. Sure beats the days of carrying pounds of massive camera gear, thick cable stringing, and lighting in an arena.

Amen to that. Those one hundred pound Marshall heads weren't any fun on the full stacks.
