A Jazz is just a better player for me.

Well, you tried it out for awhile. I think certain instruments just speak to individuals more than others.

I believe you're right too.

This is my 1998 American Deluxe Fat Strat Locking. I bought it new in the spring of '99. No matter how many guitars I buy, and some of them have been far more expensive, I never seem to bond with any of them as deeply as I have with this one. This is my "go to" guitar for pretty much anything. It's a little bit of an anomaly. It kind of reminds me of way back in the day when there was a much, much larger difference between good guitars and bad ones. Today you still walk into a music store and try every Strat or Tele or whatever and pick the one that speaks to you the most but they are nevertheless fairly consistent when compared to years ago. Modern manufacturing produces a more consistent final product. For some reason this one has what it takes to be above the herd average. I've had several friends fall in love with this guitar and subsequently rush right out and buy one just like it and be disappointed that it's just another Strat and not the "magic Strat" mine is. Don't ask me why because I honestly don't know. It's basically stock except for cosmetic changes. Scratch-plate and knobs. That's it.

What's the actual color of it? It kind of resembles the finish of my P-Bass Lyte I have, with the exception that your's hasn't peeled off everywhere, and your's seems to have a purple tint to it.

I have 4 short scale basses, 2 Musicmasters, 1 Fender and 1 Squier, 1 SX Jazz bass, and one Fender BG-29 acoustic bass.

The BG-29 has it's use in our acoustic group for sure. But in the rock band which I play with more often my go-to, run back to, workhorse is always my '78 Musicmaster.

True, I've done some mods to it but all of the original parts have been kept just in case. Before my son airbrushed it I bought a 2nd body and modded that to a string through body bridge and a Seymore Duncan 4 mag pickup. It's my baby for sure! 8)

That's a pretty cool bass. 8) I like those short scale models.

I think you were referring to my mine. If so the colour was called Transparent Purple although Wine would be a better description than purple as it is a fairly reddish purple. I believe it was only available from 1998 to 2000. So far it's the only Fat Strat from that era I've ever seen with the brushed grey machines. Any other I've seen had bright chrome machines.

I wouldn't say that just yet PaulLF, I've always loved the tone of the vintage P-Bass! I am looking at a MIM P-Bass in a local shop, that has the P-J pickups in it. Not exactly the vintage look, and that is my dilemma there. Do I want to go with the modern setup? Or should I just wait until a used vintage P-Bass comes along?

P.S. I only keep a Bass Guitar around for recording purposes. I'm primarily a guitar player, that always goes back to his Stratocasters :D

The Am. Std. Jazz I have is a bit lighter than the Geddy Lee, so I favor it a bit more. 8 Pounds feels a just bit friendlier than 9.2 pounds. The Am. Std. feels a little smoother too.

If, for whatever reason, I was ever forced (kicking and screaming all the way, mind you :D ) into owning just one guitar, it'd be a pretty easy choice: I'd grab this 2013 '52 Relic Telecaster in Candy Tangerine:

A Gibson SG Std. Bass has always been one of my go to short scales.
