If you feel comfortable between the Violin, and the Ibanez, that's cool too.

Yeah, but to be honest, I wish I could get my hands on an acoustic bass, as well. That would be handy for situations not involving electricity, like busking, or jamming with people in the park, etc. Ibanez has a few models of those that look interesting, if I want to stick with that brand, which does play and sound nice.

You think that also happened from heavy lifting? I suspect that's what screwed my arm, or hand up. I've had a tendency to pack mule a bunch of things, like heavy groceries, or whatever, so I wouldn't have to make multiple trips. Of course, there's always the occasion of hauling speaker cabs, but I don't think that would have been the contributing factor, because I wasn't doing that when I first had the issue, and the way the handles on those things are, it might effect your back, more than anything to do with the arms.
Colleagues and I did a lot of heavy lifting with television gear, and yet when we were technical directors we also did a lot of hands on switching of either large audio or video consoles and then some. AFAIK none of us ran into issues from repetitive hour after hour day after day work unless, perhaps, weight or awkwardness was involved. We were younger and better fit of course.

I played a lot of drums military and otherwise, plus guitar to a lesser degree with no issues, until I had six months of successful therapy because I mistakenly tried a small socket wrench to remove a truck tire and my arm decided to be the lever damaging my shoulder and arm until I got help. Since retiring, tendons, pinched nerves, hands including trigger finger and elbow problems surfaced. I guess that’s what’s called payback. I think foolish decisions, not having the right tools to do job (often the case and we know designs sometimes fall short, perhaps, like cabs as you mentioned Paul), not being in shape to do the job (you should see the exercise work specialized steadycam operators need to do for example), and a host of similar things plus a little luck have a bearing. Other than that, age catches up quickly and it brings surprises. YMMV

I’ve learned this month that the body can actually repair and even compensate for a great deal (something like a starfish) with exercise. I may have to find that out for myself. Whoo boy!
FSB

There’s a big difference in how the body gets or doesn’t get abused when money is involved. I’ve worked at the bottom of the ladder, halfway up, and for the taxpaying government.
Now that I’m on my own, I have a good light weight amp, but an affordable great lightweight combo would be even better. :D

Well, ever since I started walking two years ago, I've found myself in better shape at now 46, than I was ever in my 30's. I had to, otherwise I'd might not be here right now. I had lost at least 90 pounds, although the last 20 that I'd wanted to drop have been stubborn, but's that's also my fault, because I kind of been slacking with the diet thing, to where I'm not dropping the weight like I did. At least I've gotten this far, which is more than I could have said in the past. The thing is, you don't see too many old men that weigh over 300 pounds, like I did, or if they are still alive, can walk on their own. I didn't want to end like up like that, and I had to do something while I still could.

We’re glad you’ve succeeded, Paul. You’re an example to all of us. I have challenges yet to discover that will surely change my typical lifestyle. I’m not convinced that I’ll have the determination that you have, and I applaud you. That’s quite an accomplishment. My will power and motivation is excellent, but my human weaknesses like to mix things up.
It seems that some advancements made, at least in my case, often have the opposite affect or research changes their assessment. Is that a reason not to do something in a positive light? Nope! However, it is pretty frustrating at times. :?

How does this work with the topic “Anyone Have A Bass, or Guitar You Keep Going Back To?” Well, if you wanna keep going back to those favourite instruments of yours you have to do maintenance on the player.

I'm going to be 43 next month and 2 things that have helped me in a lot of ways in the past were skateboarding and The New York City Ballet Workout. Since I work with people in wheelchairs actually being able to Plie has helped with my lifting technique and helped my back.

That's for sure, Paul. I'll be 66 in a few days and lost about 80lbs in two years due to ill health and not eating. You are still a young man and you have chosen a good path, IMO. You have chosen good health and longevity and we support you 100%.

The thing is if you want to do something like get in better shape, start off with doing baby steps, and just challenge yourself each day to try and do a little more, or go further, even if it's walking an extra 5 feet. Then, just don't give up, even if you have a rough day, try again tomorrow. When I started out, I could barely walk a 1/2 mile, before my back would start locking up and I'd be in pain. Then I kept at it, day by day, eventually hitting 3 miles (I remember the first time I'd do that, and it did kick my arse,) and now I typically will go at least 6 miles, with hitting 7 on a few occasions, also going up and down hills. I'm probably on the extreme of doing that, other than some joggers that I see running around that make me look like a couch potato, since I think the government recommends something like a small fraction of that for weekly exercise. That's just my personal thing, and not something that you necessarily have to do.

As for getting back on topic, did you know that you burn calories by just playing guitar? For my weight, I burn roughly around 100 calories for play 1/2 hour sitting, and 200 calories standing. So even when you're just playing, you're technically exercising. :P

I did not know that. I knew that drumming is great cardio exercise (if you are physically capable of it); but, calories never crossed my mind. So after your post Paul, I thought I’d check what the traps could do. According to Harvard and Oxford cognitive brain development and lower blood pressure had been found, and BBC reported that it burns more calories than weight lifting, aerobics, or running.

Similar to your announcement about guitar and calories, Paul, it’s about 200 to 300 calories per half hour depending on how aggressive you are. Imagine playing for hours where exercise or running that long might not be the case.

However, belly fat doesn’t apply with either guitar or drums. IMHO.

Very cool. Thanks, Paul. Finally a calculation that works in your favour instead of beating up on you for eating donuts or ice cream.

Thank you, Paul. That looks like a good site and I'll get a lot of use out of it. And thanks for the good videos! I'm working on my tablet right now because my laptop is at the shop. It's old and pretty slow so I'm falling behind in the Forum.

No problem. I actually have a few different of those sites bookmarked. They're really handy if you want to keep track of that sort of thing.

Today got close and personal with my MIM Classic 60s Tele. That guitar can get to places other guitars just can't reach.
