Yeah, it's nice to have some options. 8)

That's cool. 8) It's nice when you get a hold of a decent player, and you don't have to do anything to it to make it playable.

Hey, Marky. Pretty soon you’ll be doing a Charlton Heston, “Come pry it from my hands” schtick. That would be so cool. :P

I've gotten that way with the USA GL Jazz. Most people would think I'd be that way with the Rickenbacker. It's a great bass, but the Jazz is just tops in my hands.

I can see that, Glenn. Mojo magic and the spell is powerful.

For me it’s the Strat over the acoustic electric by a long shot. A lot has to do with overall comfort versus tone. Getting both right is difficult. Leo got a lot right.

Jerry Allison (Crickets’ drummer for Buddy Holly) played a cardboard box on “Not Fade Away”. I bet that box was his favourite after trying others. :D
Some things just click.

I've noticed that the Jazz has been your go to instrument for as long as I've known you, or at least the one you go to the most, even when you try other things.

I'm glad you are enjoying your Strat and Glenn and Paul are digging their Fender basses. :D

The Jazz basses are in my comfort zone of playing, and the USA Geddy Lee Jazz is the top Jazz for me anyway.

Thanks, Marky.

You know there’s a funny thing about my Amn Dlx. Those noiseless N3 pups are not to everyone’s liking. They don’t sound like vintage 62 for example. But, I have spent time A/B ing some old Surf tunes against my axe. While some are hard to match, I write that off to a number of reasons; however, I have managed to reproduce some of those tones and response (along with other genres) and that is good enough for me.

I sometimes think it’s like chasing your tail to think that what was can be today . . . because there are trade offs, be it the axe, the amp, the pedals or a host of other things, and that includes a lot of unknowns about the original music. That could be recording gear versus live or various versions, and timelines for when the performance occurred. Many artists have lost or released their original gear only to replace it with what comes close or is improved.

But, one thing that remains constant for me is the comfort and playability. A great sound without that is going to have a short love relationship. This is not unlike playing drums that sound good but aren’t comfortably setup.

I have a tendon problem in my fret hand and cramping or trigger finger is always possible, but so far it is very seldom to almost non-existent. A ‘62 Strat belonging to a friend spoke comfort to me in those days and I never forgot it. When I decided to join the guitar world again, Strat came to the rescue.

*Note: 1962 saw hands on construction with the tapered necks and so they were not all equal. In August that year (some say July) rosewood veneer replaced slab rosewood for the fretboards. Minor dimensions changed. It could be the reason I found that original ‘62 so comfortable at the time. Others may not have had as good an experience. Still others may prefer the thicker slab and beefier neck. Today’s modern necks (for me with a satin finish in the back) is much to enjoy.

And that's how it came to be. :D

You know, I have a slight issue with my bottom left hand with some nerve damage, which is probably an ulnar nerve thing, or whatever, that is one of the contributing factors for me switching over to a short scale bass, besides making transitioning to an electric guitar a lot easier, to and from. It's not so bad that I can't use it, although one time I was temporarily paralyzed there, which was a serious drag, because music is my life, and that made it really difficult for little bit, but then it got better, thankfully.

Mostly when it acts up, I just get a slight numb sensation, but it hasn't prevented me from being able to play, especially if I have time to warm up. I just noticed with the short scale, it just makes it easier for me, and I figure at this point in my life, there isn't anything wrong with convenience. Sure, I can still play a Precision Bass if I want to, I'd just have to get used to it, like anything else, but why bother, if I don't have to?

I also like the fact I don't have to warm up as much, especially when it's cold weather out, or if I have pre-gig nerves. I know my hand will go where it's supposed to, and I won't have to worry about flubbing any notes during the first song. I also don't have small hands, which means if I do want to stretch it out, I can cover a lot of ground really fast. Of course, that took some getting used to when I started playing the violin bass, since that neck is really small, but that also helped me with guitar, as well.

I have an issue with tendonitis on my right arm. Tennis elbow, from repudiative working. The tendon runs from the shoulder down the arm, and ends at the pinky finger, where it controls the movement of the pinky. I technically don't have tennis elbow, my tendonitis is in my right wrist.

You think that also happened from heavy lifting? I suspect that's what screwed my arm, or hand up. I've had a tendency to pack mule a bunch of things, like heavy groceries, or whatever, so I wouldn't have to make multiple trips. Of course, there's always the occasion of hauling speaker cabs, but I don't think that would have been the contributing factor, because I wasn't doing that when I first had the issue, and the way the handles on those things are, it might effect your back, more than anything to do with the arms.

I'm going back to the violin bass, tonight. I've been putting in some time with the Ibanez, and it's an excellent player, but I like to switch it around as much as possible. One of these days, I should put more time in with the other instruments, as well.
