Well, lookee that. I was in Fort Lauderdale in the 60s too. :D No doubt the strings were there. Fort Lauderdale was a pretty rockin' place.

I know some stores, but few, carry them here today. Seems to be more of a small store niche. In the early 60s I used to have nylon strings too, but I don't know if they were Black Diamond. Very likely they were given the few options.

I pretty much grew up in, or around Fort Lauderdale back then. You may have known MAE, a mom, and pop music store on Davie Blvd.

Sorry, Glenn. I never got there. I spent a little over a week in that area around Spring Break, on my way to the Panama Canal. As luck would have it we had several fires on board my WWII Fleet class Destroyer, and one fire was at Fort Lauderdale’s dockside by the cruise ships. We used many portable extinguishers from 3 of our ships (2 being new) over the trip, and because of it, they couldn’t be replenished easily. We had to wait for supply from elsewhere. This meant an unexpected layover in Ft. Lauderdale. Imagine. What a place to be stuck in at the age of 20. Happy crew. Tough, huh?

I found it to be a very nice place and people were extremely friendly. I’ve never been called “Honey” by so many bleached blondes before or after in my life. :D
I was in awe to see used car lots full of Caddies and teenagers driving them to and from Miami, and I was surprised to see the beach empty in the afternoon as a shark was tossed over protective netting. Something tells me there was a groovy place called the Orange Room? Also, just off the beach there was a restaurant that gave me a steak dinner after I ordered a burger. I was in uniform and some kind couple thought that I was underfed because I weighed 128 pounds with a 28 inch waist back then. I ate pretty good on the ship across the bay, and when I offered to pay the waitress after a thank you, my Canadian and American money was no good. ‘67 was a different time and servicemen get treated much better in your country than ours as I found out many times with appreciation from the USO, the public, and elsewhere. Fort Lauderdale was no exception, and I never forgot it.

I took that hike from Fort Lauderdale to Miami so I and my mate could experience the local fare. We had a hoot looking at all the funky theme related motels, and the pink flamingos. It must have been terrific for you with all the music and happenings. Cool place. 8)
Fun times for sure. :D

High school in Fort Lauderdale in the 60's was a cool scene too. Stranahan High class of 1970 / The Mighty Dragons.

Very cool ring, Glenn. Very practical. I have a school jacket, but it hasn’t fit for decades. I was on a committee for a 25th HS reunion and some came from as far away as Africa. Funny how the homely girls and guys looked good and a lot of the babes and jocks looked the opposite. Sure was great music of the 60s though. :D

I was going to go to my class reunions, but decided not to. My wife asked why not. I told her, I'd like to remember them all as we were in school. YOUNG, the world in front of us as a dream, and being just as Stupid as the day is long.
I did go with my wife to her 10th year, and 20th year for her Pompano Bch. High reunions. She didn't think they were that great. In a way, I'm glad I passed up Stranahan's reunions.

Nice ring, Glenn. I lost mine but I still have my school jacket. I was class of 70, also. :)

Well, I went back to the Ibanez Talman short scale again today. I have to say, it plays very smoothly. 8)

1970 was a good year to break out from school. Nice to see another '70 kid. My ring fits on my pinkie finger now. That ring meant a lot to me, and I guess still does. My three years in high school, was the one time in my 12 years of schooling that I finished the schools years without moving somewhere. I started day one of my sophomore year, and graduated with the class in 1970. For me it was a big accomplishment.

Does it play smoother than the Violin bass does?

Well, the action is a little bit lower on it, and the neck has a satin finish on it, plus the Dunlops feel like lower tension, so I'd say so. But, the neck on the violin bass is narrow, so those things don't necessarily slow anything down like they might on a long scale bass. I could lower the action by tweaking the truss rod a bit, but then I'll risk having the strings on the 1st fret buzz again, which I had issue with before.

Besides, it's more the finish on the back of the neck that might drag slightly, especially with the humid weather, than the action. I still can fly on that bass, though. It's just the Ibanez that I can practically slide on it without really even plucking a note. I think the strings also factor in this, since it wasn't like that with the rounds, even though the action was fast. You'll have those ridges on the rounds add friction.

I was playing the GL Jazz just a little while ago, and I really appreciate the hand rubbed back of the neck on it. I do notice a bit of a difference when I play the Ric with it's back of the neck having a bit of drag on it also.
Your Ibanez sounds pretty darn good.

I went ahead and played the violin bass for a couple of hours tonight. I usually do that when I'm watching TV, since I'm just noodling along and not plugged in to any amp. It's definitely a different instrument than the Ibanez, but not in a bad way, and it also sounds different sonically. That's the whole point of it, though. It has that early to mid 60's thumpy tone, which I do like for certain things.

That's good then. It's a good thing to have a couple of basses to be able to switch off on to.
