Don't forget, there's always the regret of getting rid of something that maybe you should have held on to, because of GAS for something else.

Ya, like that’ll remove the GAS.

The funny thing is I'd actually get picks for free from this one shop that I'd frequent and bought a lot of stuff there, back in my early days as a musician. They'd just give them to me, since they were dirt cheap anyway. Most of the time I had picks because of whatever guitarist, which were usually friends of mine, always forgot theirs, and I don't use them when I play bass, or very rarely. :P

In most instances, I can break a GAS attack in a music store by going over to where the Marshall stacks are, and remember how much fun they were to move as a Roadie. That brings me back to reality fast!!!

Yeah, I'll bet! Sounded pretty damned good, though.

For me live listening, and watching, there was nothing I loved hearing were Marshall stacks blaring with full power chords being played. I still love the sounds of Cream, Blue Cheer, and Humble Pie live pushing their Marshalls past the limits. I've always been amazed at how much punishment Marshalls, Sunns, Hiwatts, Acoustics, etc. were able to withstand show, after show, and still play with not that much down time.

Yeah. Thems were the ticket . . . and not to take a back seat there was this from Fender:

They just didn't go. The Coral Kilowatt SS 1,000 watt setup didn't go either.

True, but demographics and cosmetics also had a great influence. Least of all, the CBS Musical Instruments name on the Fender’s 400 PS faceplate might have helped to be a turnoff (especially overseas), and demographics and pride of Marshall being with the British Supergroups of the day didn’t hurt either. Besides, like me with my English drums, Europeans with their Fenders and Gibbys, and we with our Marshall’s, it was and often is cool to have gear from another land to be different. Of course once we are the same, that’s when a closer look of the advantages, disadvantages, and prefererences occur, especially when the next best new kid comes along.

History shows, however, that Fender (and Ampeg to some extent) did open the door for a great amp line of Marshall, the new kid on the block with a new set of clothes. How popular was cosmetics? Ask Kustom (released 2 years after Marshall). That’s an unfair comparison, perhaps, but appearance sells guitars too as we all know. There will, however, always be the give me ugly with great sound, and beauty with ugly sound. Go figure? :P
Then there’s bragging rights as with Gibson that comes with price and availability. That’s why so many players get to see the stage, and how some equal or better gear can or has to thrive as boutique in this day and age. Why one thing gets picked while another doesn’t can be less clear than the obvious. IMHO. Look at Beta versus VHS, and Bluetooth speakers and it’s amplification versus Hi-Fi.

Still, the music world would have missed out had Marshall not come along and, as with other things, we, Marshall, and others can thank those who came before and laid the groundwork whether it was good or bad (and some of it was very good indeed).

Note: I have no doubt that if Eric Clapton’s and Pete Townshend’s early requests for preferential build had gone elsewhere rather than Marshall, they would have succeeded, perhaps, differently, but with a similar result, maybe worse or maybe better. Who knows (see that?), perhaps, Pete and Eric did approach others with their concept? It certainly was an advantage for Jim, Eric, and Pete to be living in the same neighbourhood.

Let me digress for a brief moment. What I find cool is that both Fender and Marshall were not founded by guitarists. Jim Marshall a drummer and Leo as we know a technical genius. That was beneficial as their attention honed in on what guitarists wanted and needed. The rest is history.

That was a seriously bad $@! amp. Awesome for bass, but kind of ridiculous for guitar, unless you just use one channel, and couldn't really push it into overdrive without blowing your head off. Hell, my 18 watt 1982 Fender Super Champ gets pretty loud and stays clean, but it also has a 150 watt EV Force 10 speaker in it that came stock. A lot of head room with that speaker.

Least us not forget Sunn that was starting it's high powered concert amps in 1964. One of the finest concert, arena amps, that at one time or another, was used by some of the top headliners.

Yup! I’ll second that, Glenn. Thanks, to Portland’s Kingsmen and the Sundholm brothers Conrad and Norm, and later Fender.

That brand was circling the area when I lived on the west coast in the 60s and it was very well received. I was surprised at it’s demise.

Well, it technically could still exist, at least in name, but there's a certain company, whom we partake with their forum and products, decided to buy the brand and mothball it.

Yeah, I think there was probably a few conversations and expletives concerning that, from one time or another.

Well, I actually went back to my Squier Telecaster Custom today. I spent a couple of hours playing on it, before I switched over to the violin bass. It's been quite a few months since I've picked it up, since I've been mainly concentrating on bass. Oddly enough, it didn't feel that strange to me, since I've been use to playing on short scale basses, these days. When I was playing on something like a Precision, that took some more getting used to, because of the differences in neck size.
