I keep going back to my 23yo Mystic Red, maple neck Strat. I love the sound and feel of my new Gibson SG with those fantastic Classic '57s but there's something about my old Strat that just feels better. 8)

How long have you had that guitar? Since it was new?

Okay, you guys. I’ll toss you this question. Do you have a favourite player and, perhaps, maybe a different one that gives you the tone you prefer? Also, do you have or prefer more flexible tone with any of them as far as switching goes, and does it make a difference in your choice?

I hate to say, sometimes I just grab certain basses out of guilt for not playing them in a long time, but I generally go by the feel of the bass, more so than a certain tonality. I suppose if I had nicer instruments like a Rickenbacker or Hofner, that might be more noticeable with those electronics in those. Of course, that also means $$$, which I'm unfortunately lacking in right now. I do what I can, though.

No I bought it used about 11 or 12 years ago from my local music shop that I used to frequent. When I saw it on the wall I had to try it and that was it. She came home with me. 8)

There’s lots of reasons why instruments are chosen or not chosen.

Some buy their instrument based on $$$, which if done wisely can work because all things $$$$$ are not always a better player or tone tweaker. Most times they are though. As my father pointed out, “You can’t buy champagne on a beer budget”. Even if you have the money you may opt for something lesser of value. My dad who built cars, was not a snob or wealthy, but he refused to buy a Caddy. He couldn’t accept why someone would buy the expensive one only to have a cheap version pull alongside. He’d rather have a unique but good lesser choice. That's my Dad. Sold his ‘55 Chev’ for a lesser car.
Some buy because of real or perceived popularity, often seen with someone they admire. No matter how these idols received them (such as sponsorship) or use them (different instrument from the same or different brand, and perhaps, even a different player or accessory for the recording or different guts/mods with the badged gear), what you see isn’t always what you get.

Several camps exist for eye candy. Looks are all over the map, The same as somebody else, not the same as somebody else, pristine, not pristine, or just because you get goosebumps.

I purchased my drum kit firstly based on my taste for sound, and yet the first kit I played occasionally was another decent more famous equally priced set. My kit was like the one for Jimmy Hendrix, The Who, and more. The other kit was for The Beatles, Buddy Rich, and The Who along with a bigger roster than that held by my kit. I would have been happy with either choices. But, I also considered that production and distribution on this side of the pond, and sponsorship and promotion played a part. Some of the better things in life are not announced and they aren’t at the corner. Some come with a high price tag and some don’t. The downside is parts are often hard or impossible to get.

My Strat, also different than the one I first used. The first (not mine) - old school and a then modern Daphne Blue. The second - modern build but an old school maple neck on a Sunburst body. The first - 3 way switching (5 if you jam it). The second - 10 way switching (5 with the toggle and 5 with the S-1). Both Strats are chosen for their tone and their looks. They both have different prices. One is vintage and the other is 6 years old. The first is two to three times the cost of the second because it has what some would say, questionably - the Strat sound of the early 60s. With the second, the modern Strat, I can get close, but not exact, to that sound with an A/B test for some music, but nowhere close to the vintage Strat for other music . . . however, the reverse is true too.

Did I mention playability? I prefer the advances made on the modern body, and the necks are a personal choice with one better for rhythm and the other, perhaps, better for lead. IMHO

Whatever you choose or spend, there will alway be something better or worse. Sometimes a plate full of less expensive lowly delicious shrimp versus a plate full of one or two pricey steaks can be just right. :P

YMMV

Cheers!

Well, my three favorite guitars, in order of preference are: Fender Strat, Gibson SG Standard HP, Gibson Les Paul Custom. I don't play the LP much because it's too heavy (over 10lbs) and I don't like its 490/498 pups as much as the SG's. The Strat is my favorite because of its looks, feel and tone. IMO, the Strat is still the most beautiful guitar made. Maybe because that's what I grew up with. Like most of us favor the music from our formative years. There are many gorgeous guitars out there but the Strat is the one that catches my eyes.

None of my guitars have special switching so I work with the tone and volume a lot. All of us here are familiar with that beautiful single coil Strat tone so I won't go into that. I don't like the look or feel of my SG quite as much as my Strat but the 57 Classic/Classic Plus pups make up for that big time. They sound incredible to me. They are great for crunchy classic rock to high gain mayhem. They have great string separation and articulation and are not muddy, even with the gain cranked. They are great for blues too with lots of sonic warmth and plenty of bite.

So to answer your question, FSB. My favorite player is my Strat but I happily play my SG when I want a different tone. 8)

Great post, Marky. You have a nice collection for comparison. Thanks, for the detailed blurb.

I think that an instrument often finds you. You just happen to go to a certain shop that you might not regularly do so, or happen to look on a website the right time and find the right deal, with quite often not really thinking a lot about it ahead of time.

I can concur with that. I know when I went on the Sweet Water site, just to look around, the last thing I was intending to do was to order the USA Geddy Lee Jazz I have. It's turned out to be the best USA GL Jazz I've had. Ya' never know. 8)

So right that the instrument finds you. My head is pounding from all those things that keep calling my name when I walk into my favourite music store.

If they ever re-arrange the store by moving those things of interest together where I enter the store, and the others to the back room, I’m going to need a gurney.

As it is, I’m lucky to get out alive with my wallet intact. :P

I just hate when you find that one unique piece and you don't have the money to buy it. You know, it's kind of masochistic to go into music gear shops when you're broke. :P

Thankfully, we can walk out with a new guitar strap or, at the very least, picks.

Ya, like that’ll remove the GAS.

I agree too. One way or another, you'll be united with that perfect instrument. And probably a few duds along the way. But when you sort them out, it's harmony. 8)

 That might help at the first symptoms of GAS but not a full-blown attack.
