I just find it less stressful, even though it might be less convenient to do so. Although, bass cabs wouldn't bother me, since they're usually pretty sturdy, as long as you know what you're putting into them. My bass head is certainly portable in that fashion, if there is a cab available, and I could just bring that.

I'd rather use my gear that I'm familiar with in the first place.

I fully get the reliability concerns when using another’s gear. That can be good or bad. Playability is another factor as we all know. Sometimes, however, we luck out, and it can, at times, be better than our own.

Not so much with a set of another’s drums. While the gear at hand could be cherry, a quickie arrangement for one’s preference and playing style is seldom possible. Too much hardware adjustments are possible.

I sometimes sat in with a 20 piece jazz band on a moment’s notice, and were I to adjust, the main drummer would need to readjust. It just ain’t cool to have 19 musicians wait for your comfort and technique.
Plug in and tweak - a whole lot less effort. Besides it’s fun watching the other guys’ (or gals’) tweak to compensate competition.

Using someone else’s pedal board? Fuggedabout it. :P

I'm going to go back to the Ibanez bass, since I do want to get in a lot of playing time in with the new strings on it. I have to say, they're pretty amazing already, without any need to break them in. The action on that bass is perfect. I can really fly on that neck. 8) I'm sure I'll be back on the violin bass very shortly, as well. I don't go too long at all between playing one or the other basses.

I hadn't played the USA GL Jazz for a bit, and I was in awe of it playing through the Fender / Ampeg setup. The Ric 4003 should do well also.

I imagine that it should do so. Those are pretty killer basses. 8)

Hey, Glenn. What speakers are in your cab? Whatever they are, those cabs rock, and the head amp goes without saying.

The speakers in the SVT-410HLF are Eminence Ampeg specs. Probably similar to the Eminence Fender specs ones.
The head got changed out this morning for an Ampeg PF-500. The specs are very close to the 800. It's a single channel, headphone jack, and can be played without a load with headphones. It's about $600. buckaroos cheaper, so it didn't cost me any extra, and I received a credit that I used on the card. ImageImage

I went back to the violin bass again. I generally have been going back between that, and the Ibanez, depending on my mood, I guess.

Looks to be a pretty good deal all in all, Glenn. Eminence are not only in your cab, but also in Carnegie Hall.
It’s fairly easy to hear the difference between tube and solid state guitar amps (Briefly. usually a harder roll off and harmonic differences both with a bigger notice at high ends. Breakup and bottom end obviously come into the picture), although the gap is shrinking and compensations can be added.

Do you hear a distinct difference with the bass that would say, “That’s SS”, or is it simply not discernible but different, and would you say it has audible advantages not possible with tubes? We know that bass in and of itself has different characteristics than that of mid and high range.

Here’s a crazy question (rule#1 newbies: There are no crazy questions in the Forum). Is there any bass modeling out there with hardware? Would that even work?

Now you need a nice bass boat to haul that nice gear.

I'm not noticing to much of a difference with the SS / Tube sound with this PF-500 through the SVT-410HLF cab. If there is any, for me, it's not enough to matter. The differences between the PF-500, and PF-800, were only a couple of decibels between the two amps.

By the way, what made you decide to go with the Ampeg over the Fender you had? You wanted to match up your Ampeg cab? It just sounded better to you?

That’s what counts, and so true, as most of us know, that moderate increase in wattage doesn’t always translate to a much higher sound level. As for MOSFET SS there’s often a variety of electronics in the overall chain, and as long as the end result hits the mark desired it really doesn’t matter how it gets there. IMHO. Ampeg and Fender both have a history where they are more respected than not, and I’m sure your PF-500 is a winner, Glenn. I know your cab is.

I found this, although not Portaflex, scientific, or a perfect recording, it does a pretty good comparison between SS /Tube Ampegs:

For those who might find some interest - amp class difference:

Class A gets little or no use in bass amps, and Class AB can be found in tube and solid state. Class D will only be found in solid state, having reached popularity on stage with Peavy’s innovation in 1984.

Put all together it comes with the mojo, the hands, and the ears. :)

To me, the PF-500 had a bit of an edge on the sound I prefer, was smaller, with headphones, and can be played without a load. The Ampeg / Ampeg does seem to match up fine. I also got back a decent credit on a card I used on the Bassman 800. There's no way I can over watt the SVT-410HLF with the PF-500.
