Those amp simulators are pretty nifty. Especially when some offer cabinet changes and even mike placement.

I did amateur 3D drawings/animation years ago, and I used to tell fans of it that a photo of an apple was better than a drawing, and both photo and drawing were no competition for a real apple. However, it is unlikely that the real apple could be manipulated and incorporated with multi media like the copied media.

The same argument is used between real amps and simulated ones. But, I wonder if that real versus simulated argument would have as much weight had some of those classic hits been done with credible software (more likely in today’s recordings).

One thing that is really cool about similar software is that yesteryears’ and today’s amps and related gear can be archived. and available for now and in the future. Did i mention the weight advantage? It’s still not a real apple, but maybe it doesn’t have to be (or maybe it does) YMMV

Have fun with the bass software, Paul. I’ve been aware of some older and newer bass optimized software. Let us know how it works for you if and when the time comes.

I have to say, I've never used a miked amp to record, just either used the line out, or an MXR Preamp/DI pedal, but listening to it with the added simulation certainly added a lot to the sound. It gave it an extra dimension, or body, I guess you could say.

I’m always reaching for crazy out of the box things. Mostly failures, but that once in a blue moon result makes the effort worth it. Many times it is a one time event without keeping massive notes and sometimes luck plays a part.

You made me think of the common two mike method with two front amp mikes, one front and one ambient mic, or a front and back mic. (Perhaps, the bass miking would need to be simplified). I wonder, however, the possibilities of mixing and matching these arrangements with a software simulation as discussed. Latency and other concerns may play a part; but, still I’d be up for it just for the experience. Maybe, somone here has tried it?

I don't know. I'm sure someone has probably experimented with that. I know with the simulators, or the one my girlfriend has on her recording outfit, is you can just add it after the fact, along everything else, and not even use it when you are doing the actual recording, so that does leave you with many options with that.

Choices are one of the greatest features when I think of digital recordings. So much is said about quality and features for good reason, and those are improving as we speak.

Many tracks, one click undos and redos, and dependability are made available at minimal cost to amateurs and professionals alike. This is something that was not possible amongst common tape and hardware studios (home or otherwise). Some will argue a difference in the sound, but any differences will not be around for long, differences don’t have to have a negative effect, and the benefits and workflow have a charm of their own.

Still, some days you just want to hit the record button (I know I do) or crank that amp knob and step on a pedal. Why not have It all? It’s easily within reach both in house and on stage. After all, having a software stockpile of mics, amps, cabs, pedals, keyboards, axes and more is very impressive. Getting it on a desk is even more impressive. Getting it all on a final recording, that’s the best part. :D

Now where’s my white grease pencil and splicing tape? 8)

Yeah, there is also something about recording in analogue, watching the wheels go round and round, as John Lennon once sang about. I think that's what that song was about, watching the tape reels while recording.

I love the looks of some of those decks. It’s like the charm of classic versus jazzy modern cars. I don’t like the repair or expense, but I do miss the screeching of binding tape along with the silent dropouts of a cherished recording. :?
Ah, the wondrous tunes they gave us (and sometimes still do) make up for everything. :D

It does have a certain punch to it. Especially, the bass.

I've been back to playing the violin bass again, since I've been listening to a lot of Beatles and 60's music lately. I've noticed my instrument preferences often relate to what type of music I'm currently listening to, although they do have a similar aesthetic. The Ibanez short scale I have does have a 60's vibe to it, I think. It needs flats, though.

I changed out the Black PG on the USA Geddy Lee Jazz, for the Black Moto PG. While I had it out, it was a good time to play it. I've been playing quite a bit of the time on the Ric 4003 Jetglo lately. The USA Geddy Lee Jazz is still my top bass. A Fender Jazz, is a Jazz.

I'm still playing on the violin bass, but I'm sure I'll go back to the Ibanez when I get the flats for it. I do need to break them in a bit.

Your Ibanez should be a kicker with the Flats onboard. 8)

Yeah, I think so. Especially, when they break in.
