In my continuing effort to have all of my guitars different, I'm thinking of changing up my Warmouth partscaster. It's now SSS with Fat 50's. It sounds great, but I have another Strat SSS that also sounds great.
I spend most of my time in the middle and neck positions. I'm thinking of 1. putting a humbucker in the middle spot, or 2. putting a DiMarrzio Virtual Vintage in the middle spot. I've already had a HSS Strat, and since I rarely use the bridge position that doesn't appeal to me right now.
So my questions are:
1. What humbucker would you suggest to play nice between the two Fat 50's?
2. Or, what DiMarrzio Virtual Vintage might fill the middle spot.
I'm looking for a solo worthy middle option, but want to keep open the possibility that I'll combine it with the bridge if the song warrants it.

Go with DM's Heavy Blues or Heavy Blues II for some ballsy honk.

The guitar will still look like a Strat and you can use your standard 250K volume and tone pots.

Plus, I wouldn't have to reroute my guitar. I foolishly ordered it with SSS routing instead of a swimming pool. Some crazy idea about mass and sustain. Actually, the Warmouth is sonically louder when not plugged in, than my American Deluxe. But I think it's the Cobalt strings that I use on that one.
I'll look into the Heavy Blues, Arjay, thanks.

Anytime, Drew.

I think you'll find (like I did) that the Heavy Blues gets dangerously close to P90 territory. They're pretty hot.

I ordered a DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Blues DP402. It's not as hot as the Heavy Blues, but at 8.2k and Alnico 5 magnet, I think it will do the job and give me a potent middle position. It'll be a couple of weeks before it gets here and gets installed. I'll let you know then how it works out.

Sounds promising. Post your impressions once you've had a chance to wring it out through an amp.

I know it's not a humbucker--but how about a P-90 in a Strat?

That's what I did with my HSS. Liked it so much that now I'm converting a HH.

I have a Tele with SD P90's. I love the sound of that guitar, but the p90's are very noisy. I think this Virtual Vintage is a good choice. I'm hoping to get the time to record a before and after with the same settings on everything.

Have you seen the Mustangs with P-90's?

I don't really need another solidbody--but part of me would really love to get one.

For those who don't have routing for a P90, or don't want to modify the guitar body, an alternative that's closer to P90s is a blade pickup. Like the P90s, blade pickups have a single bar magnet underneath instead of individual magnets for the poles. Wired hot, they're not too dissimilar from P90s in sound, and can work great for high fret solos.

A Hot Noiseless in a single coil package is another alternative for more "umph", but then you're in humbucker territory, and lose a certain something at the treble end of things for the benefit of less noise. They're great for pinch harmonics, though, as the weaker harmonics won't die in noise.

I'm in Pebble Beach for the concours. Guitars on hold. I started recording a before sample before I left.

Drew you got a car in the show or are you just enjoying eyeballing some fine automobiles?

And to keep this guitar related, I was going to suggest why not go with three P-90's for something totally different. I play my Gibson Les Paul Special WAY more than I do my '61 SG Reissue.

I wish I had a car that could get accepted to Pebble Beach! I was supposed to bring a car up for auction, but it wasn't ready. Since we had to make reservations eight months in advance we decided to come up for the week of festivities and ogle. This is both car heaven and car overload. I got my fix, so I'm good.
I decided that I would probably like the Virtual Vintage Blues that I got for the mid position, but that there was a good chance it wouldn't balance with the Fat 50's. So I went whole hog and ordered a complete set from DiMarzio.
Here's what I have to put in now:
Neck: Virtual Vintage 54 Pro, DP408, Alnico 2, 7.75k
Mid: Virtual Vintage Blues, DP402, Alnico 5, 8.18k
Bridge: Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues, DP409, 8.53k
I made a before recording of the mid position, because that was what I was originally going to change. Now I need to make a before recording of the neck and bridge. Then I can do the swap.
Here's a tease from Pebble Beach. This was parked in front of our restaurant in Carmel the other night.
