My wife got this picture from a school friend. It is her friend’s father’s lap steel guitar recital.

The picture was taken in 1950.

I really got a kick out of all the amps lined up in the front. I wonder if any of them are still around? 8)

I'm guessing that many of those amps are rentals from the same store, with their logo stenciled on the grill fronts.

Cool pic!

I wonder if any of them went on to become famous.

That's a really cool photo, thanks for sharing! I'm kind of surprised by how many girls and women are in it. I guess I shouldn't be, but I've attended guitar workshops nearly that size and been the only girl (or one of a very few) before.

Well, this picture is a little before my time(My mother was 9 at the time it was taken), but I think Hawaiian music was popular then and it was before Rock n Roll. That maybe why there are so many women/girls. I think the guitar became sort of , "unlady like" after Rock n Roll.

Disclaimer: The "unlady like" is NOT my way of thinking!

It looks to be from a time when women were accepted, but people of color were not.

Yep, that was the other thing I noticed. But given the (backwards) thinking of the time, I was a little less surprised by that.

I also figured that they probably weren't playing rock or blues! The Hawaiian music thing makes sense. Country music might've been the other most popular thing you could play on a lapsteel, though in some cases even that music could be a bit on the unladylike side. I was lucky in the sense that my friends and family didn't steer me in any particular musical direction solely based on gender. I think a lot of people make assumptions on what sort of music girls ought to like, and those assumptions are generally misguided.

Fab pic, Omar. Thanks for that.

Here's one woman who had the steel guitar mastered. 8)

. . . but, then again Barbara could play a whole slew of instruments with a rare talent seldom seen.

+1

My five year-old granddaughter loves to "shake her bootie" to just about anything......the "Frozen" soundtrack, vintage Motown, Taylor Swift, Brooks & Dunn, Bon Jovi, The Smithereens......anything. I'm hoping to get her into piano lessons when she's a little older.

Hawaiian and Western Swing, both using lap steel, were popular at that time. Guitar solos (pre-rock-n-roll) were relatively uncommon, but not so with the band's steel player.

I've seen old photos (20s, 30s, 40s) that showed women and women's groups playing guitars and other stringed instruments. Just my recollection, but there seemed to be equal numbers of mixed and all-female groups. Playing guitar in general was popular in the 20s and 30s and the so-called Parlor guitar was created in part to meet demand. It was evidently lady-like enough to play one because I've seen enough old pictures of women sitting with a guitar in hand. I suppose too that if both you and your gentleman caller had guitars in your laps and your hands on the frets ... other social problems might be avoided :)

I have a hunch that our return to old fashioned morals post-WWII, where women went back home and kept house while men got the jobs, etc. has to do with your observation about the 50s. There does seem to be a distinct lack of women instrumentalists from the mid-50s on (some notable exceptions of course), with women relegated to singers only. The great Nina Simone left the US primarily due to rampant racism, but a significant factor many don't know is that she was also told to sing only, no more playing piano (she's exceptional) during her gigs. She was also totally cut off from playing as a side-person, just another member of the band.
