Sharing a demo I did on Saturday. This song came from nowhere, and I admit it's not quite done. It's me playing drums, bass, and some guitars... and doing the vocals.

Drumming is sketchy, vocals are shaky.... but the spirit of the thing is what I was trying to go for.

I think I will take this and polish it up, allow some parts to evolve, and hopefully it comes out improved on the other side.

No, I'm not singing about wheat flour. The name Semolina came out of nowhere. It fit the sonics of the space I wanted to sing it in, and it kind of sounds like a girls name!

As always, I'll listen to feedback and input!

Heya, Mike. That's a great tune. Catchy and it should be readily available for others to enjoy IMHO. I really liked it.

Just some thoughts after listening to it several times back to back.

Great harmony and you play well. Nice mix overall and the tone is good on the axes and the traps.

I would like to hear the main vocal upfront a touch more with the harmony vocal just supporting it a touch further back. Just enough so there is no question as to who the lead singer is. Unless you prefer a duet.

If I heard correctly you have a nice bass run going on, and it could be interesting to hilight it briefly with the rhythm, combining it with with a competing alternating solo from your lead/rhythm.

The intro comes bang in with all guns shooting at once, perhaps, starting with the drums and/or bass or lead to guide the audience to a full band sound might be fun to work in.

At any rate, your song and performance sound fine as is, Mike, and I don't intend this as a critique - just an alternative food for thought. Your song reminds me of Neil Young. Well done.

Thanks Strat Brat - exactly the kind of feedback I hoped for. The version I posted was a writing demo and admittedly is not quite finished, either lyrically or arrangment-wise. I plan a more polished version and have already started thinking through ways to fine tune the approach.

I do like the intro idea. The harmonies were sung and mixed quickly (all on a single Saturday) and I can certainly notice what you mean about competing parts. It could be a bit of insecurity too since I'm not a confident singer. I tend to build harmonies to avoid too many solo parts, but I like the harmonies too!

Since I just picked up a digital piano, I may add some textural organ parts in the background too.

Glad I could be of help, Mike. You have it together with your ideas, and I couldn't disagree more with your lack of confidence on your vocals. It's amazing how many singers fail to harmonize well. Some of the best vocalists I have worked with were and are backup singers. Some of the best recordings are because of the backup singers and sometimes they are better than the lead singer. IMHO nailing one's own backup and backup mix is an important component that is often given less attention than need be. Mike, I think others would agree here that you sound great.

Semolina should be barn burner when you complete it.

Cheers!

Very nice.

I would put that on a Road Trip Mix CD (that's a high compliment --I refuse to listen to crap when I'm driving a long distance)...

I'd like to hear the finished product.

Thanks all. Normally, I'd say that I get enough satisfaction merely by following the process of writing, recording, mixing, and listening. I really do this mostly just for me.

But it's great to absorb the feedback and get a little bit more energized by the response.

I'm looking forward to finishing this and sharing the result. Gimme a few weeks!
