So, what are the "must haves" for your hot, rockin' summer gigs?

I'll start with this thing:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lasko-Pro-Pe ... 5yc1vZc4lw

These things move some serious air and double as an extension cord with 2 outlets on the side.

:D

I'm not sure that fan is RF noise safe. Or rather, I am pretty sure it's not shielded in any way, given the price.

I'd recommend this:

... and a bug spray that won't eat guitar finishes.

This works great as a bug repellent.
You might smell like a lady, but at least you don't get bitten.

My mom sells Avon, has for years. I'm quite familiar with that brand. :P

Lots of water! Shade is good too. Can't really expect to be in the shade all afternoon and into the evening but should have at least an hour or 2 of it.

Along with "lots of water", I'd add, "lay off the booze". I know a lot of us are still from the school of "sex, drugs and rock & roll" and while I certainly enjoy a few cold ones on a hot, sunny day, the truth is that alcohol will dehydrate your body REALLY fast. Seriously...hang overs are bad enough. Heat stroke just SUCKS.

(Beating a limping horse) Lots of water and for those of us with thinning hair -- don't forget your hat (which also helps hold water in). Skin cancer on the scalp is no fun so unless I know for fact that there will be shade the whole time, it's a hat all the way.

A small ice chest with freezer packs or ice. You can add water if you are of that type, or you can just throw your hand towel into the ice chest and use the cool towel to wipe your face and arms every few minutes. You can even take a couple of towels and exchange them between songs so your neck stays cool. Do try to avoid the wet towel thing while plugged into electricity...

From experience,

1. Wear sunscreen, but play a guitar you're not in love with. I played my nitro finished Tele at an outdoor July 4th gig a couple of years ago and there's still a bubbly spot in the finish where my arms touched it. If you've got a guitar with a poly finish, play it. And just to be safe, wipe it down with guitar cleaner (not just a dry cloth) when you're done.

2. Drink a ton of water and go inside if you start feeling light-headed. I pushed myself to the limit at another outdoor gig in 100 degree heat a few years ago, and ended up feeling sick and emptying my guts up in the nearest bathroom. Thankfully, at least it wasn't onstage.

3. Do not set up near a pool. I had to play a poolside gig once with lots of splashy drunk people. Your gear will not like splashy drunk people. Electricity and water don't get along. I nearly had a heart attack whenever someone splashed too close.

Your kids, if it applies, to have them do all the heavy backbreaking lifting. :D

There's a lot of great suggestions so far. Thanks for everyone's contributions.

I survive the summer by staying indoors and wait for the miserable season to be over. :P Actually, it's usually down time as far as any gigs are concerned, but there's always things to do in the studio, or promo, that sort of thing.
