I recently saw a show from the Rush R40 40th Anniversary tour. I am an admittedly huge fan that was seeing them for the 12th and likely last time...

First off, I did not want to look at set lists of prior concerts. I just wanted to go in and to be surprised, good or bad. The first cool thing is that you soon realize that they are starting with their most recent album (Clockwork Angels), and moving back chronologically - album by album, in order. As they move back chronologically, there are stage hands that are backdating their amps setups from very futuristic when commenced to the final single sparse amp at the end, coinciding with the first album. Hilarious. They played many items off the beaten track, a number of their long suites, and ... a FIRST for me ... finally, I got to hear live a track from their 3rd album (Caress of Steel).

Geddy's voice was the strongest he has been in a long while. He sang ridiculously good. Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart killed it, as they ALWAYS do. As for length, it clocked in an unusually long 3 hr 15 min. Since the Test For Echo tour around 1997, Rush has always done the "evening with Rush" format with an intermission and a 3-hour long show; the R40 show seemed long even for them.

Any one who is still yet to seem them on the R40 tour: I envy you ...

I saw them back on the Roll The Bones tour in Feb. of '92. That was a pretty good concert from what I remember. I haven't been able to see them live since then, but I have watched all of the DVDs, etc. Great band. 8)

I had a really bad seat. :( 5th row directly in front of Alex and everyone was too old to stand so I could actually see the strings move on his guitar from a seated position! LOL They played most of the oldies first then presented the clockwork material. It was a bad $@! show and I learned alot!

I guess it was the clockwork Angels tour. Here in San Diego. Video sound sucks! It was great live!

I have only missed a Rush tour when they have come to Boston (Or Worcestor Mass) maybe twice since 2112. Missed Clockwork Angels, and the Grace Under Pressure tour.

I am in to Rush the way some guys are to The Beatles, there really is no other band that matters to me.

I agree with you about Geddy, he started very strong, and he ended strong. I attribute this to the way they started the show. (newest then back in time) Having to start out singing the stuff he sang 20+ years ago has gotta be a tall order for him.

Overall, this R40 show IMO was the BEST performance I think I've seen to date. They simply KILLED it.

The second set was, to put it mildly f---ng mind blowing. I left the TD Gardens in Boston wanting MORE.. I'm sad to think this would be the last. but who knows.

The stage hands changing out the back props was pretty cool, however, everyone who's a die hard like we are should know that Alex and Geddy have not used "amps" for at least since the Snakes and Arrows tour. (well Alex anyway,,) So all that stuff at this point, is really stage props.

Incidentally, there is a very good article in last months Rolling Stone magazine. if you get a chance, check it out.
