That's very sad to hear. Wishing his friends and family well during this difficult time, I know we'll certainly miss him around here.

I like the way Fender is keeping this bumped to the top over newer topics.

Shows a lot of class and respect for a Forum MVP(Most Valuable Poster).

More a factor of interest and reply I trust. Great appreciation for all who expressed their condolences.

Topic went more than a day without a post, yet Fender kept it on top over all the new ones. Guess is their way of honoring a fallen member.

A post tagged as a "sticky" (with the paperclip icon) will always remain at the top of the queue.

And if anyone truly deserved it, it was our Martian.

I usually don't post on these kinds of threads. I don't know. I'm not really sure what to say.

Martian had a lot of interest in pickups and wiring. You could always count on a well thought out response to any question.

My first encounter on this forum with him will be something I'll always remember. But it's not because of the advice he gave. It's because he ended his response with "YMMV".

And I had no clue what in the Hell that meant. I tried looking it up in acronym sites, and couldn't find it (at the time anyway). I wasn't sure if he was trying to passive/aggressively insult me, or if it was some technical electronic term.

Of course, I could have just asked him, but my ego wouldn't allow that. I didn't want to appear stupid or anything. And for a few months or so, I just kept asking myself "What in the Hell is YMMV??"

I think later on he actually wrote out the whole thing in a post, and I was like "So THAT'S what it means!!" That acronym bothered me for months. Entirely my fault. Like I said, I could have just asked.

But every time I see that acronym, it will always remind me of Martian. Forever. It's just one of those weird things you never forget.

I think Martian would get a kick out of the fact that the stamp he made on my brain forever is YMMV. Which is probably the most central nucleus to any debate concerning guitar sound. Advice can only be given based on one person's perception of what they like or dislike. It's the main reason there are a billion models of guitars, amps, parts, mods and tweaks available for the consumer.

Aside from that, there is one bit of advice he gave that still sticks with me. And that was, to try out OEM pickups before just yanking them out to "upgrade". If it wasn't for that advice, I wouldn't be enjoying my favorite neck pickup which happens to be a Squier pickup. Or a few very good sounding Duncan Designed pickups.

And what's at the center of that advice can also be described, once again, as YMMV.

Sad to hear the news. I didn't know him personally, but he'll be missed on this forum for sure.

A well written tribute and thanks for carrying the signature forward. It's meaning is likely far less important than its source.

My feelings exactly - one could always count on Martian's will to help, and rely on his knowledge.
My condolences to his family and friends.

I just learned of martian's passing this morning...I could easily have lived a happier life not knowing...

...when I first met him he set up my Glossy Relic in minutes...making it a much better player...just the tip of martian's talents...

...he was a card carrying professional musician...played with theater orchestras...where you better KNOW your stuff...and many more bands...humble & high...
...and as you know him...a wise man with deep & vast pool of knowledge that will be missed...

...So It Is...though...while we are distracted by grief...
...out of this world of strife...and consequence...
...martian ascends...to a better...higher place...
YMMV

"While we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil." - John Taylor

This post of mine is from yesterday...happier times...praising martian...though too faintly...

Personally, I'm not terribly fond of vintage frets and don't enjoy the stock finish and fretwork of the "basic" USA Clapton Strat. A CS Teambuilt is a noticeable improvement and a MB Todd Krause is even better (if money is not an issue), however if you know how to do a finish/fretwork licensed necks (high quality ones) are for me a better and legitimate route to go.

Couldn't agree more...in Sep't. 2014 I bought a 12 y/o Clapton neck for just that reason...

...forum member martian...an accomplished musician & luthier...re-fretted & dressed it...

...we settled on semi-jumbo frets...and I couldn't be happier with the result...

...it feels like a New Clapton neck...with a naturally aged tint...rather than stark white...and broken in feel...just right for my build...

...total cost: south of $600...AND I got Exactly what I hoped for...

...what it looked like originally...

...with new frets & tuners...

...just what a Clapton concept build needed...The Hot Rod Brownie...

(ed. note: the file marks, etc. are from a previous owner...not martian 8/6/15)

I found this on a good friends facebook timeline and thought Martian might like it.

"The Broken Chain"

We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love and knowledge is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always in our hearts and minds.

Our forum chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
