Hey guys! 1st of all . . . Sorry I have not posted here in a while. Decided to take a break.

Have any of you ever made a strange modification to your musical equipment/instruments that no one would understand but yourself? Perhaps there was a strange sense of humor behind it?

Well . . . . Being a huge fan of the greatest band on this planet (Spinal Tap). . . I have a friend who said he can modify my MADE IN CHINA . . . .10 WATT MARSHALL Amp. That's right folks . . . that small bugger will have the dials go to . . . . you guessed it ! ! ! These will go to 11 !

I don't think I've done anything considered to be strange.

But in the early '90s, a bass player friend of mine had an odd idea. He installed a gate latch on the body of his Bass. During shows, he'd take that gate latch and click it from time to time. It was a really wild effect.

I haven't done anything truly outrageous, but I've seen an acoustic guitar that had a passive speaker installed. If the goal was to direct more of the sound forwards at the expense of overall volume, it might even have worked.

Not a bizarre mod as such, but an amateur repair.
I have a mid-70s El Degas SG copy with an ivory coloured nut. The end by the low E had somehow broken off, and the original owner repaired it with regular tan coloured (kinda' greenish) epoxy. It sorta' stands out like a missing tooth, but it gives it some character and is a memento of the original owner. He's an Inuvialuit guy named Peter Palvik, in the Canadian Western Arctic. It's the kind of thing they did there, often crude-looking in execution, but extremely effective and practical.

There are also two extra holes for the upper strap peg. Trying to find the sweet spot for balance, I guess.

Interesting that you ask that particular question :) . I couldn't prevent myself from buying a Fiesta Red CV Squier Strat the other day. I already have an Am Std Strat, and I don't usually "double up" on equipment - but [ Lengthy exuberance on quality of guitars today, bang for buck of the CV range, flame on the neck, metaphors about beautiful women and how I'd like to commit to a lifelong relationship with an inanimate musical instrument, etc., etc, almost ad nauseum ] I thought I might enjoy 'modding' it.

Sadly, there is almost nothing I want to change about it!
I've blocked the trem (although it's hard to avoid playing Hank on a Fiesta Red Strat, the 2 point on the US strat is fine).
But I'm not in love with the one-ply pick guard. So, I've been recently looking into replacements, and nothing took my fancy. Nothing. So I started looking at creating my own designs.

I'm working on my first now. It will be ready in a few days, and I'll try to take some progress photos (although I'm not good at that!) I'm only replying because it's Spinal Tap themed.

Jono.

I did as a kid at onetime, thread beads onto strings on an acoustic to give it a bit of dirt / buzz / fuzz, even experimented with tin foil either side of bead to stop them running up the frets, was a long time ago and school didn't pay. Now I just buy the damn pedals.

patent not applied for

Way back when, a buddy of mine screw-mounted a holster for his Browning High Power inside of his Super Reverb just in case the crowd got unruly. I don't favor screwing holes where they do not belong so I'd just keep a .45 auto on top of my amp. The venue itself was akin to the saloon in "Road House", with a very "spirited" audience.

I don't think that I've done anything particularly strange, but I do have the bridge pickup of all of my Strats wired to the second tone knob along with the middle pickup. I just don't like not having a tone control for everything.

Nothing too bizarre...blocked the tremolo and re-wired the tone knobs so I have tone control on the bridge pickup of my Stratocaster; also installed a push-pull pot that turns on the bridge pickup no matter where the selector switch is set. I also keep the "ashtray" bridge cover installed, because (1) it looks cool and (2) pushing the saddles together and adding mass to the bridge seems to increase sustain just a smidge. Changed the stock pickups to SP90'S (Stratocaster-sized P90 pickups) made by Pete Biltoft. I did a few cosmetic changes, too--pickguard, etc.

I also installed a P90 in the neck position on my Telecaster, a four-way switch and a Fender No-Load tone pot, as well as a pickguard change...but none of these things are bizarre.

Nigels guitar has to be the ultimate mod- I don't think any of us could compete with that!

not too Bizarre, maybe a little "different". after the pickup in my Epiphone LP jr that I use for slide died, thats all I had around was a mexican tele neck pickup. Its actually an improvement as far as the sound goes, at least for slide. Its surprisingly biting, but not overly so.

Good to see you here, SK!

The quadbucker woodpecker is not a mod - it's 100% stock.

The Marshall amp stack guitar, on the other hand, is a mod. It existed in two versions - one half stack and one full stack. Here's one of them:

OK,
This was much more problematic than anticipated. I have forgotten that it has been years (decades) since I picked up a paintbrush in anger. I honestly think I'm better with a mouse!

Originally, I planned to use decoupage. I traced the cover on my computer and was going to print out the scene as layers, but a quick sketch on a spare pickguard template looked good, so I decided to just paint it.

I did learn a lot making this, and I'm not unhappy with the result. But I will remake it, as I think it should be simpler and more stylized. I might also make an "Intravenous De Milo" pickguard, and a "Rock 'n' Roll Creation" one - I have the materials for about 6 more pickguards. I have my own ideas too, so maybe I'll see.

Thanks ;)

Jono
