I have not seen such a post here, saw this on another forum, and, interestingly, unable to find anything from any other source, let alone, Gibson or Fender.

You didn't look far down the page here before posting.

I'm not sure what's strangest - that two people within a week referenced this more than four year old blog post, or that neither person noticed the 04/01 date.

Anyhow, Henry Juszkiewicz might have been good medicine for Fender. Not good tasting, but good medicine seldom is.

Really? Just a few threads down, with a link to the exact same story, dated on April fool's day, four years ago.

Obviously, did not pay enough attention to the date, nor the fact of the previous post....

Date aside, there's also the issue that both are US corporations and considered to be in direct competition. There'd need to be an SEC sign off on any such deal and that would mean months if not years of hearings, etc. No way could any such deal in progress be kept secret once negotiations became serious.

My employer is in a niche industry with 2 big guns (us and "Brand X"), 3 smaller players and a bunch of very low end services. If either we or our (by a nose #1) competitor went to buy one of the small companies, we'd have to get govt agreement. (Yes, I know this for fact because both we and our competitor have at least gone through the motions of buying a smaller operation in the industry.) It could not be kept secret and all those who could be affected -- all our remaining competitors, our clients, our competitors' clients and any other interested parties -- would have a right to speak out on it.

At the core: we'd have to show that competition would not suffer and that consumers would come out no worse off if not ahead. It would be interesting to see any arguments that suggest that we consumers would all gain by a Gibson-Fender merger. It would be something like GM and Ford convincing the government and numerous consumer groups that a merged GM-Ford would benefit us all, cost no jobs, etc.

Though I have to say (on a lighter note) that I found my Fender-Gibson. I've been playing with an HH AmStd Tele that's pretty close to the best of both worlds. All with no Fed approval necessary :)
