As someone not adverse to thumb fretting, I like it. Except for the neck heel block which is the big square type, which surely negates some of the benefit of having an extra cut-out. That this guitar of all Fender Teles didn't get the "custom" corner-cut version seems rather odd.

The Double Cut Telecaster has the shaved neck heal block.
I like this guitar except for the belly cut, which I don't think should be on any Telecaster.

For gods sake elongate the top horn, it looks unbalanced

I know what you mean.

And I know it would serve no practical purpose but I wish the pickguard was extended at the rear to provide a contoured shape. All Teles look like the guard was just cut off because that's only as long as it needs to be and it saves money.

Saving money was indeed one of the overall goals Leo Fender had, but there was an esthetic reason too: The Teles had the ashtray covering the bridge unit, so extending it further down looked weird.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if the pickguard was even smaller. Having it cover the lower bout seems to serve no purpose.

I am glad it covers more area on the bass side than a Strat pickguard does, though. It makes thumb tapping, thumb picks and thumb bracing easier. Strats are good for using a pick or chicken-picking, but less suited for Spanish guitar style fingerplay or thumb picks.

I've caught the middle pickup on Strats when using a thumbpick - another reason to use a Tele for them. Other than the twang is a main reason why alot of country music players choose the Tele.
