Yeah, but the whole premise here was needing an amp that was not going to be just for guitar/vocals.
The Acoustasonic does that part well enough.

Guitar/voice amps tend to have a frequency range that falls off the top to reduce noise, and a focus on providing pleasing inherent reverb and softening - qualities that will deaden the high register of a tin flute, and muddle the 128th notes and percussion of a flamenco guitar.

There are some good suggestions in this thread, and I'll have some things to try out now. Thank you to everyone!

For some reason, I really hate the way the Bose systems sound. There's just something I can't put my finger on.

I use a Mustang I and Roland Cube in tandem.
Studio Amp on Mustang can get a good clean sound, as can the equivalent on the Cube. Both amps have efffects, reverb etc. and the Mustang has a compressor and noise gate.

For a pure acoustic guitar (one without pickup or bug) I would use a good condenser (eg Rode NT3 or similar) into the Mustang

Last I checked, the Mustang I have in the basement does not have an XLR input. And can't run without an electric guitar amp emulation either - even the "clean" settings will simulate tube break-up when the input becomes high. That's exactly what you don't want in an acoustic amp.

Well a small PA setup is still favourite ,but I don't get break up using the Fuse Studio amp with gain turned down.

Use a XLR to jack lead (same applies on Cube which has a "Mic" preset)

bypass Mustang input stage with an adapter into:-

Quote:
Aux / Phones Jacks
Auxiliary Input
You can use the Auxiliary jack to input audio into your
Mustang amplifier for accompaniment. Connect the
headphone output on your CD player or MP3 player to the
AUX jack using a mini-stereo cable. Use the volume control
on your player, together with the MASTER volume knob, to
adjust the auxiliary volume level

I too have never been a big fan of BOSE speakers or headphones. Not that they are bad, but they definitely have their niche that some find gimmicky while others find the same enhanced.

I met a major sound company's engineer who explained that making great sound is not always going to be according to great specs, as he proceeded to show how filters can be beneficial under certain circumstances.

I have owned a 12 string and had the fortune of sharing accommodations with a classically trained full time flautist who lived above me. So I am in tune with the request.

As for my opinion of BOSE, the afore mentioned BOSE L1 system did grab my attention when it was demoed. In this regards, BOSE got my thumbs up. It is now on my radar.

I don't know if BOSE L1 will meet all the requested requirements; but, IMHO it is worth a listen and, at the very least, may complement additional choices of gear.

There is a wide variety of excellent acoustic amps out there. These include a wide variety of features and prices.

If looking Top-End, suggest (in order of preference):

AER Domino 3

Image

Genz Benz Shenandoah Shen 300LT

Image

or:

Trace Elliot TA 200

Image

For Mid-priced, suggest:

UltraSound PRO-250

Image

Fishman Loudbox Artist

Image

Roland AC-90

Image

or

Fender Acoustasonic 150 Combo

Image

For Low-end... well I don't suggest any low-end... you gets what you pay for and an acoustic amp is arguably more important than an Electric Guitar Amp in the first place !!

cheers!

What happens is all these type of systems severely color the sound of an acoustic guitar. The sound is so modified that a true flat response is almost impossible. On my Fishman, you start out flat and work from there to suit the room. I've plugged into an L1 and an L1 Model 2 with the B2 bass module. It does a nice job of getting the sound around a small room, but really doesn't sound natural to me and kills the tone of my guitar. It just depends on how picky you are with your tone. I've seen the video's and kind of chuckle at the artist endorsements. What's next, a Beats Audio PA system? That said, for a small PA system, It might work for you. Let's face it, most of us work in bars or medium sized clubs. Bose, gets a lot of sound out of tiny drivers for sure, but sub woofers on and acoustic instrument kind of put me off a bit.

I hear ya. For groovin' and chillin' with an iPod or stereo Beats and Bose may fit the ticket. My ears like a clean start (especially for recording), then coloration for added effects at times, but not always. I haven't seen the endorsements for the L1, and Fender Expo hasn't crossed my path as of yet. The L1 was presented to me while I searched and bought a mixer, so I only threw it out there having heard it, and having met someone who uses it and likes it with his acoustic professionally. I'm sure it isn't for everyone, but it appears to have some following. As for PAs, they vary in quality and sound, and some plain suck with the addition of mixed room sound that sometimes doesn't lend itself to reaching that sweet spot. We can't all afford PAs like the Eagles, or play in Carnegie Hall.

With all the suggestions here, (Lightnin' great amp selection ), there's plenty of choices to be sure. The Bose may once again drop off my radar.

How true. I think that for many of us it's "I wonder if the pub has a working PA", and we go from there.

Got that right. I played out of many a house PA

Great list.
I love my Genz Benz Shen Pro LT.

I'll add one more for the list if you don't mind.
Acus amps are quite pricey but if you want high end these are right up there.

Acus Amps

"Want" is one word. "Can justify" are two words.
