Ok, while this post doesn't really have anything to do with guitars, Fender or music at all, for those who may be wondering why I've dropped off the forum so abruptly, this time it was because something GOOD happened...my wife and I got a new puppy!

Image

Meet Molly (also known as Molly Mayhem and The Molly Monster, LOL!)...she's an 11 week old Shepherd/Husky mix and we brought her home 3 weeks ago. After having lost 2 of our 4 older dogs this past year, my wife and I decided it was time to get a new pup...and this one is a SERIOUS little stinker! For those who may be familiar with Husky's, YES, she pretty much needs CONSTANT supervision. Her training is coming along well and she's REALLY smart, but the moment you take your eyes off her, she's off looking for trouble. Needless to say, she's been keeping me really busy and I haven't had much time at all for my usual internet blather.

Anyways, it's probably gonna be a while before I'll be able to sit here on the computer again and be my usual annoying self, but I wanted to take a moment and share this little ray of sunshine that has come into my life! Now if I can only get her to start sleeping in...those 5 a.m. "potty trips" are a killer! LOL!!!

LOL!!!!!! Didn't even think of that! And at 11 weeks old, she's already got more "growl and snarl" than a vintage tube amp! I just wish I could take a fret file to those sharp little puppy teeth! LOL!!!

Cute... The reason she is two handfuls is the Husky part. It's the Alpha type A personality of Huskies, Samoyeds, Malamutes.
My dog years ago was a Samoyed / Black labrador mix. Came out looking very much like a border collie.
I spent many days watching the litter to pick out which dog had the personality I was looking for.
She ( Sari I named her after a ski racer. ) The whole litter would gang up on her as she was the runt of the litter. But after they had lost interest she would systematically go after each one and make her point.
May have been the runt but most definitely the brightest of the bunch.
I will say it took a good 6 months of training for her to understand I was the Alpha dog not her.

It's one thing that annoys me about most people and their dogs. They don't understand the canine world, not only as what particular breed and what traits were bred but also that dogs seek an Alpha figure. If not they become the Alpha and without guidance they become a mess, at best annoying, worse dangerous.
Dogs always want to please, they are intelligent but left on their own wits, they will get into trouble...
Dogs will also adapt to their owners traits, be they good or bad.....

Anyway good luck with the recent fuzzball. May I suggest an occasional day nap ??

Congrats on your new family member. A good friend had a Malamute, and that was a hand full too. Huskies do get into everything. Image Image Image

I absolutely agree with everything there. It never ceases to amaze me how many people will get a puppy or dog (regardless of breed) without ANY understanding of the commitment that's required (even regarding the basics)....and it breaks my heart at the number of dogs in shelters all because of such ignorant and ill-prepared owners. As many trainers say, teaching dogs is easy...teaching PEOPLE...that's the hard part.

While Molly is our first husky (mix), I will say that after Myeisha (a Rott/Collie mix), our current oldest, and Kara (a Chow/Elkhound mix) who we lost in December (she was 15), I do have a pretty fair idea of what to expect, LOL! Myeisha has that Collie energy level along with the Rotty stamina and even at 12 years old, she's still "a goer". Kara on the other hand had that Elkhound independence and "single mindedness"...took me forever to get her trained. Yea...we've had some characters, so Molly is fitting right in :-)

Yes, she really is a smart little stinker. In 3 weeks, she's picked up most of the basic commands - "sit", "come", she knows her name and she's even learning "fetch", "sit pretty", etc., and I'd say we're about 95% of the way there on the potty training. She is being a bit stubborn about "stay" and she certainly has her own mind about some things, but we'll get it there...eventually (LOL). And yes, she does get plenty of naps! LOL!!!!!! In this case, she's actually very much like a human child in that if she plays for too long, she becomes "brat dog" and needs a "time out". The good news is that our other two dogs, Myeisha and Mariah (Mariah is a 10 year old Belgian Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix) have turned out to be OUTSTANDING baby sitters! They're actually very gentle with the pup, but they'll knock her on her butt when needed...at least it gives me the occasional break to get some coffee and a bite to eat.

I will say that after having read up a bit on Husky behavior in general, Molly's probably gonna be on the leash a bit longer than other pups I've raised. She -is- sneaky and really good at figuring things out, so she's REALLY gonna have to earn my trust...I'll be keeping a really close eye on this one! That said, even with all the "joys of puppyhood", both good and bad, she's already turned out to be a really wonderful addition to our family.

Congrats mate, and thanks, your story and pic really lifted me, I just lost my 11 year old Rotty in January and I'm still devastated about it, I live alone and she was such a big part of my life, such a great companion I swear she could read me like a book and knew what I was thinking!

Molly is gorgeous, I can see the cheekiness in her eyes and she has an expression like a happy Muppet! she looks so happy to be in her new family.

As we all know here, raising your pups properly is important.
Congrats.

Great to hear you're responsible with your pets... I've done a few things to help out some of the animal shelters in my area. Thank You for being one a the good folks who care about the animal.
That's one cute kid, thanks for posting a pic :D

My wife and I have what must be the best of both worlds (dog/no dog), because we have a friend who has two Eski-Poms. Whenever she goes on trips she has friends take care of them rather than kennel them. We usually get just the older one (8-9 years?), who is fairly well-trained, and she likes us (we suppose). By the time six weeks are up, she's lost weight because we're more easily able to take her for walks/runs through the woods.
It's like having a grandchild come to stay, but we try not to spoil her. A nice long visit, and then she goes home again, and her owner is responsible for all the vet expenses and such.

No...not pinning the ears. We really don't like doing things like that (same goes for having tails bobbed and such)...whatever happens naturally, we're good with :-)
