 Got a recent e-mail from Fender about improving my guitar playing. Beginners, Middle, and Advanced advice topics. About a year ago I gave my e-mail address to a guy named Marty S. for ten free lessons. Big mistake. Nothing is free. In return my e-mail address was sold and I get about 65 - 75 spam msgs every day. I hope he is thanking me for putting money in his pocket. Be wary when you sign up for something that is free. You'll pay for it like I did.

So far that is not the case with Fender. They already have your email address from signing up on the forum, and I have registered for several contests and such, so...... I think that it is OK to sign up for lessons from Fender. :)

They have had my email address for years and I don't receive any spam.

Clarification on this. It's not Fender selling the e-mail addresses, it is the guy from whom you get the guitar lessons.

This is why you have more than one email--and use one or more addresses for stuff you sign up online--if they spam you too much you can just stop using that email and create a new one.

Is anything ever truly free?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I've signed up for various Fender things for a long time now and no evidence of any spam ever originating from them. I have several email addresses and that usually lets me narrow down the source of a barrage of new spam fairly quickly. Fender: honors their agreement not to pass on your email, etc.

I had my email hacked a few years ago, ended up getting back in eventually with a new password....turns out the culprit was one of those "Earn 500 dollars a day" scammers so I checked where it came from ....CBS news

Contacted them and they didn't want to know (plus I'd never been anywhere near cbs news)

There's a ad that pops up on Facebook which says that you can get a " Free " guitar headstock tuner , provided you send them $2.99 to cover postage. Just WTF is so free about that ?

Sounds like a classic "As Seen on TV" offer to me. Just $2.99 and we'll DOUBLE your order. You just pay separate processing and handling. And if you CALL NOW, we'll demand your credit/debit card number first, read you a rapid fire list of other offers first. The tape will be rolling so any answer that sounds like YES will also mean you're agreeing to take that item. With any luck (if I can talk fast), I'll have you signed up for 5 or 6 other items before we finally get to the item you called to order. And yes, technically your second Miracle Pick Grower is free, as you'll see on your 3 page itemized invoice of all the other junk you didn't realize you'd also agreed to.

Yeah, and they never tell you what the "processing and handling" actually is. :P

But they will honor the "if not completely satisfied, return for a full refund." Of course, you'll need to send both back, use special packing, and send by first class with insurance. It'll have to be within some time that works out to probably give you one day (if you're lucky) from when it arrives until you post mark the return.

Then "please allow 10 - 12 weeks for processing" to get your $2.99 refund that you spent $30 in packaging, postage and insurance to get.
