I'm back with Fender....... or Squier...

I traded the old Guild for something sleeker with some cash on top. Literally, for many years I wanted a 1980s Squier made in Japan.

Well, I got it... A 1984 Squier Contemporary Stratocaster in nearly factory perfect condition. Has an early Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and a newer set of Gotoh Klusons, but other than that, It's all original. The set up is so perfect, the frets are nearly unplayed, and it still has the original steel saddles. The only issue is a small crack in the back plate screw hole and some finger goop on the fretboard, but who the $@!& cares?

It's an early A serial Stratocaster with a really nice shallow A profile neck, almost as thin as the old Guild's.

It's light and resonant, and from the few minutes I played before I sleep tonight, it sounds incredible.

I'm very happy, though this thing is hard to photograph:

Thanks guys, surprisingly it has a really clear, defined clean sound too.

Loving it!

Nice guitar. 8) I'm a big fan of Japanese made Fenders or Squiers. Here's a website that might be of interest to you or anyone else and it might have some background on your guitar: http://www.21frets.com/ It's related to the Japanese made Squier then Fender intruments.

Thank you, that was a good read, but it didn't really mention anything about the A series. The A series officially says 85, but I was told this is from late 84. I'm reading online that a lot of A's slipped through in 84, and a lot of them were mislabeled and the SN's were all jumbled up. I can't get much further than that because all of these little blogs I'm finding are all saying the same stuff.

I don't care so much, but I'd love to know. This guitar is really perfect, though. I've never had a Fender that simply "sings" like this one does. I really don't want to change anything about it other than the pickguard. It just sounds so good.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what or if they had much info on that site, since it's been a while since I've read through it. It just was something that I remembered that featured Japanese made Squiers.

That's cool that the guitar is working out for you in any case. 8)

Me too! My Black Strat has unpainted headstock and just doesn't look right. Would paint it but planning on switching necks anyway. Rosewood fretboard looks ok on a black guitar when its freshly oiled and dark but after a day or two it just looks wrong to me so going with either a maple or ebony neck with a painted headstock.

You can get contemporary necks for $250ish if you look for em. And that's for RW, maples are generally cheaper.

Very nice new guitar Buxom!

I was surprised to see that you traded your Guild though, I didn't think you would ever part with that one.

I parted ways with it because it was a symbol of a different chapter in my life where I was going to show it off on stage, and I was going to do all of these other things. It's essentially me choosing a more "grown up" guitar with no negative memories attatched to it. That old Guild was a symbol of my fantasy world, and this Stratocaster is a totem to my own reality.

Plus, the cash I got on top of it got my family and I through the week.

Sometimes you do what you have to do. I've actually walked away from a previous life I had, including everything I owned (including musical equipment) because of an opportunity elsewhere and start over. When you think about it, a guitar is just a tool to use to express yourself artistically, like a paint brush for a painter. Sure, you might have an attachment to it, but it doesn't mean you can't use something else to express yourself with if you have to.
