When I was young, it didn't matter, even sitting cross-legged on the ground was fine. After all these years and trying everything from desk chairs to ottomans to bar stools with classical guitar-type footrests, I happened to plop down on my padded keyboard bench. It was the perfect height and had plenty of cushion, so my search was over.

Never got around to trying a drummer's throne, strangely enough.

I guess it depends on what I'm practicing. If it's band material I stand. If it other stuff I sit on a stool.

I checked the arms on my computer chair (based on Shred6's comments) but unfortunately, they don't come off. I normally use one of my dining room table chairs -- fairly short and no arms. I've considered stools but I'd need to find one designed for short people. Most stools I've had experience with are designed for average people, so my feet end up dangling in space and that becomes uncomfortable after a while.

The closest I've found to ideal was a three step kitchen ladder. Nice and short, steps in the right place for electric or acoustic. The only downside was the narrow top step -- even with a cushion, too narrow. I might some day get one and replace the top step with something more seat like with padding. Either that or have someone who does wood work re-engineer a stool slightly to make it overall shorter, including where the rungs are.
