I love playing guitar, like I am sure most of you do, but by back gets to aching after a while of playing. I bought a "guitar stool" last summer but I have found that the rail that I put my foot on is to high and makes my hip joint ache after a short time. Our dinning room chairs are fairly comfortable but with out padding on them my rear starts to hurt... arrg! :?

Maybe I am just getting old and need to not play for to long? LOL

Just curious as to what you sit on when your are strumming along at home?

I've got a couple of stools in my music room which I use periodically but, like you, find them fatiguing after only a short while. A friend uses a roll-around ottoman that's much more comfortable. Of secondary benefit, its padded top is actually a hinged lid that provides storage space beneath for cables, straps, stompboxes, etc. I'm looking into one of those.

I think there's going to be so much variation on this that it's hard to draw any conclusions except that we're all different.
For me, it even depends on what I play. A bar stool and a box to put my right foot on works well when I play a Tele, but if I play an acoustic, I need my left foot higher instead.

Whatever is available, but an old wooden rocker without arms mostly.

A nice comfy couch with a pillow on the back to lean against, and a Proline foot prop to put my right foot on. The prop keeps my foot up about 6 inches to keep the guitar nicely cradled.

Well, I'm going to be completely out of the norm here.

I sit on a computer chair. I know I'm always on here giving my experiences with great Pawn shop deals, but this one involves The Goodwill Store.

I bought a computer chair there because it was comfortable, and had a lot of adjustments. It was $15, so why not. I needed a new one anyway.

When I got home, I needed to know how to adjust one of the arms. It was bent inward. When I got online to look it up, it turns out the chair is a $1,000 chair.

That's not a misprint. The chair is specifically made for total body comfort and mainly for people with desk jobs who sit in a chair all day. It adjusts to exactly how you want it to ease tension on your back, legs, arms, whatever.

When I play sitting down, I take the arms off. It really is the most comfortable computer chair I've ever sat in.

I wouldn't expect that anyone here would buy such an expensive chair, but this is the website.

I stand or use an old chair that was old when I was born.
But it's comfy
I have a picture, but my image source is real slow right now

Any chair is good. Stand if you must.

I took this picture some time ago, and the chair was not in its normal place...

It's falling apart--but the springs & all are holding up so far...
But one day I either need a new one or to at least recover/re-upholster it...

These look interesting - The Original Guitar Chair

Image

But four Benjamins for a folding chair is a bit much... + S/H !!

Then there's this chair, fully ergonomically contoured for comfort...

Personally, I use a padded leather Bar Stool w/ back. I modified it, strengthening the Frame so I can rest my left leg on the crossmember.

cheers!

Like Shred 6, I use a computer chair, but I only took off the right arm. I find the left one doesn't get in my way and sometimes I get lazy and rest my elbow on it and still play. I usually prop my right foot on one of the leg tops. If I sit and play in a normal chair for a long time my mid back tightens up. No such problem with the computer chair because I'm sitting up and have back support. If I was going to try anything else, it would probably be that triangular thingie that Lightnin posted.

I have a Fender stool that I sometimes use (it gets better use from vocals though), and a computer chair when at the PC. There are times when I like to lay back on the sofa to relax in the zone; but, the pedals and amp are then out of reach (good time to use the tone controls), and I tend to get lazy. Haven't fallen asleep while playing though. 8)

I have a padded, office chair in my man cave , which I use whenever I'm playing any of my guitars. It's very comfortable and I love it.
