Ornette Coleman left us with his jazz compositions today.

His music was not to everyone's liking, but his approach and playing (mostly sax), made a dent with his free form and experimentation. I have no doubt he is swinging with other cats who preceded him in life and death.

R.I.P. Mr.Coleman.

Wow, I haven't even heard about this yet. I was still reflecting about Christopher Lee. Sorry to here this, too. :( R.I.P. Ornette.

Ornette was 85 and died in Manhattan of a cardiac arrest. He holds the Pulitzer prize for music, Grammy Lifetime Achievment Award, Grammy Hall Of Fame, and Jazz Hall Of Fame, plus many many more awards and accolades. Not to shabby, huh?

One of the greats and certainly an influence on both modern Jazz and rock playing. The only sad thing is that Coleman (and other innovators in Jazz) were creating sounds and styles that re-opened a closing rift between Jazz and pop music fans back in the late 50s. But I for one am grateful for pioneers like Ornate Coleman who played what they felt ... and can live with eternally explaining to friends that "no ... not all Jazz is experimental or hard bop or ...". It's worth it to have had such geniuses as Ornate Coleman with us!

Mike: I finally got to read the LA article that you posted. It was a fitting followup. Thanks.

I wonder what it would have been like with Ornette and Keith Moon playing together. They had travelled similar paths where their musical style was like multiple jigsaw puzzles strangely fitting together to complete compositions which just worked (for some and not for others). If that makes any sense. In some's opinion, it doesn't have to be perfect or expected, it just has to emote a great vibe, and they certainly did that. 8)

Sometimes my talent and inexperience sounds like that. :D
