It's been a while since I've had my Fender (HRDV). The time is coming for me to add one to my army.

At the moment, I have a choice between 2 amps. Both are asking $500. One is an '80s Fender Concert, the other is a Cyber Twin.

I've played through the Concert, and I can see why it gets good reviews. But I haven't played through a Cyber Twin before. I read a lot of good things about them as well.

Any thoughts between the two? If you had the choice, which one would you go with?

I'd probably go with the Concert because modeling amps give me the fear. :P Then again, the Cyber Twin might have been a little different than your typical Line 6, or something like that. I remember when it first came out and I checked it out in the music shop. You just hit some sort of button on it and the knobs turn mechanically. I'll say, that was pretty neat, but I'm just in to simple amps without any extra things that could go wrong with them these days. I'd rather use stomp boxes for effects, if needed. That's just me, though. You might either one or the other just as much or less differently.

No Contest - Hands Down the '80s Fender Concert !

Hand-wired pt.-to-pt., Blackface cosmetics, all tube Rivera era amp.

If you're Metal, you don't want any kind of Fender Amp, it's not in their DNA.

But if Blues/Rock is your thing, this amp makes either a Strat or an LP really shine !

Takes pedals well and can be maintained forever unlike the CT which can become a Boat Anchor the first time you bang it hard.

Sure, the CT can be repaired... for about the same price you purchased it for, so it's basically a throwaway !

cheers!

Thanks for the responses. I did like the Concert. Very much, in fact.

Although I do play some metal, I have the Hughes & Kettner Triamp for that. I play multiple genres, and I do feel like a Fender amp needs to be around for certain things.

Well if I were you, I´d use the H&K amp for metal (as you already said) and the Concert for all the other stuff. It works pretty good for Blues and Rock, but I´ve seen one at a Jazz session, too. It had a really nice sound together with a Fender Coronado 8)

Is the Concert the 1-12 or ?

At any rate, that's what I'd go with.

The Concert is a 1x12.

This was the video that caused my debate. I don't know, it just made me interested.

No love for the CT on here huh?

All tonality and sonics aside...

I have never seen a Cyber-Twin that has aged well, electronically, mechanically or cosmetically.

If the owner tried to use them on any kind of consistent basis (whether for rehearsal, gigging or recording), most of them that I have seen look and sound terrible...noisy, with digital artifact and poor tone.

There may be exceptions, but this is my experience.

The Cyber-Twin was ahead of its time for modeling amps but, having said that, it has been discontinued for almost a decade. Why? Because the modern Fender Mustang line has superior tone despite being completely solid-state. You would be better off with a Mustang IV (212) than a Cyber-Twin and would save money too!

Well, thanks for your input guys. That's why I ask. Going by this thread, it would seem like the Concert is the overwhelming favorite between these two.

It doesn't really surprise me. The Concert I played sounded ridiculously good.

The one with tubes. If it has tubes it has tone. If it is a modeling amp, it emulates tone, and many of the modeling amps miss it by a mile.

I have owned a 2x10 Concert since it was new in '84 and played plenty of gigs with it, and it NEVER let me down. I played mostly blues and rock, but we did the odd heavy rock song and I just switched from my boost pedal to an actual distortion pedal and never had a problem making it work.

Not even a contest IMHO.

They both have tubes. What now?

If it has a computer in it (if you can program it, it has a computer in it), it is a modeling amp that goes through tubes, nice in many cases but it has to be all tube without any modeling capabilities to actually sound "authentically tube". Putting tubes in a modeling amp is like putting lipstick on a pig which makes the pig look prettier but it is still a dirty pig. It seems cool, but most times it don't sound all that tube like.

I have had several items that had tubes/modeling and The Super Champ X2 is the only one that I have ever had that sounded close, but it was not really good enough for my inner tube snob, so I sold it and bought another 15 watt all tube amp that sounds way better (with stomps in front) and it is much louder, in fact it would stand up to a decently loud drummer which the SCX2 would not have done.
