Location: So far out there, it's unbelievable!
It would have been something folky in about 1966. Something from Peter Paul and Mary like, "Michael rowed the boat ashore." Or the Mamas and the Papas. Or Dylan, (The times, they are a-changin.)
Folk, protest songs and folk rock were my big start. Coffee houses and protest rallies with my 12 string, a banjo and a gutbucket for base! What fun! Sometimes we had bigger venues and I would borrow my friends Bassman with 2/12s! I don't think I could lift it now!

Peace,
Gridlok

The very first song I actually learned to play was Pipeline by The Chantays. I loved that song in 1964 and I love it today, still listen to it and still play it.

I learned it the same way I've learned a couple thousand songs since, by ear.

Do I remember the first song I learned to play? Heck, I'm lucky if, at my age, I can remember the last song I learned to play. That, according to some, may be the first one which could be both the first and last.

Siberian Khatru, by YES....Chris Squire's bass line took me a couple of weeks to figure out (entirely by ear), and be able to play halfway decently - a monumental challenge for a brand new musician to attempt! Years later I found the transcription of it online, and it was cool to discover I'd gotten it right! I've been playing for 41+ years now, and I still bring out that song for practice occasionally. It was his bass line in "Roundabout" that got me hooked on learning the instrument....may the master RIP.

Believe it or not I do.
I figure that I was about 5-6 there about.
It was Honky Tonk pt. 1.
It was the main riff part.
I picked the strings and my pop fingered the fret board.
We were a big hit at family get togethers!

"Wipe Out" was first, followed by "Pipeline" and "Walk, Don't Run." It was 1966 and I was 11 years old. Probably the first complete song with chords I learned how to play was "House of the Rising Sun."

It sure was.
Now, listening to Bill Dogetts version of Honky Tonk from back then, I see why dad dug it so much that he had to teach me how to play it with him.
It's a rock'n song!

Lol ! My first book was Mel Bey I wish I had used it, had I taken it seriously I would be a better player today. There's no substitute for the way a young mind works. Back then I just wanted to rock, I remember thinking "I wish I could get my fingers to move fast" So I put the book down and spent months figuring out RUSH "In the end". D ,G , F, C,D,G at the time I couldn't figure out the entro, years later I learned it was de tuned.

'Little Donkey' when I was 12 years old, that's like 1962.
