No, I don't remember, but it had to have been a song with C, D7, G and/or G7. They were the first chords I learned back in 1967.

I do remember the first real riff I learned. It was the beginning of "Dirty Water" by The Standells. Yes, it was pretty simple, but I was so proud.

I'm pretty sure the first song I learned, back in '65, was 'Louie Louie' by the Kingsmen.

This is an easy one for me as I am still learning them !

My very 1st song is Samba Pa Ti by Carlos Santana - chosen because of the hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, unison bends, etc. Also because I've always thought it a kick *ss song to play.

Learning Over the Hills and Far Away on acoustic because of all the chord changes, time changes and well, because it's Zepplin !

Rebel, Rebel by Bowie because although very simplistic, it requires proper timing and technique to get all 16 identical opening rifts consistent.

Learning 3 songs at once may not be everyone's preference, but for me it breaks up the monotony and keeps practice time fresh.

Of course, a lot of my noodling time is spent with several standbys: Daytripper, Smoke on the Water, House of the Rising Sun, Layla, and numerous 12-bar Blues rifts.

cheers!

I'm bettin' many of us learned early, left it, and returned like shimmilou.

In my case, when I was 14, I had a small Framus which came under my 8 year old brother's foot as it sat on the floor when my brother paid me a visit.  I moved on to percussion, dabbling with my friend's Strat, occasionally, when we jammed. Then guitar took a back seat. My mistake.[/i]

I'm regretting the decision I made when I was in elementary school:

My mother surprised me with an acoustic guitar one year for my birthday. I was so disappointed that I didn't get a boombox. She even got me private lessons at the local music store. I lasted one or two lessons and just fought with her about it until she caved and eventually allowed me to trade it to a friend for who knows what.

I'm making up for lost time know - trying to make right one of my biggest regrets. I still haven't told my mother I'm taking lessons. Maybe I'll surprise her with a song one of these days soon.

Well... having never picked up a guitar until age 57, I have a lot of lost time to make up for.

I realize this is a journey which never ends, but I would like at least to gain sufficient proficiency to play with other players and hold my own before Arthritis prevents me from playing, or Alzheimer's prevents me from remembering what I'm doing !

At the risk of sounding like an 'Old Fart' , to you younger players out there, never lose sight of the value of Time ! It is the most precious resource in the Universe !!

In that same vein, let your Mother know you're playing again at the earliest opportunity... !!

cheers!

I don´t remember my first songs on the acoustic, because thats too long ago. But my first on the electric were Smoke on the water, Stairway to heaven and Highway to Hell. The last two fit together perfectly

My first round of lessons started at age 8. (yikes, 1966!) I think the song was Red River Valley.

The universe has an unlimited supply of time. It's us that only get to live in an incredibly small bit of it. And after you hit ~30, the downhill starts, and there's no way to avoid that. You can slow the ball rolling, but not stop it.
So yes, take advantage of the time you have. You can likely do more and do things better today than you can in ten years.
Pick up that guitar. Jam with your friends. Go to a concert. Do what it takes to get the most enjoyment of your life while you can. Don't end up looking back at all the things you didn't do.

Out of context, my comment must be confusing.

I'm not at all regretful, especially when I look at all the things I did do in Life, and all the tremendous friends I've made along the way.

What I didn't do, for all the 'right' reasons, was follow what turned out to be my lifelong passion to play the guitar.

I likely wouldn't have at all if my Amazing wife hadn't forced it on me by giving me my FSR Ltd. Ed. American Deluxe '57 Stratocaster for our 15th Anniversary (and my retirement) at age 57 ! What a revelation it turned out to be. I love learning and can't get enough. 4hrs. of Practice is a slow day for me and I've advanced well... with a whole lot more to go, but I love it !!

I do agree with you about turning downhill at a certain age, but I believe that age is 45 not 30 (judging from how many new, fresh things I accomplished/experienced in those 15 years).

But, my observation (and I suspect there are those who agree) is that the years are getting shorter as they pass.

A 90 year-old sage Italian immigrant, Joe (the grandfather of a good friend) once asked me 30 years ago while we were sharing some beers: "Do know what the greatest inequity of Life is... ??" I said I hadn't a clue. He pointed to his head and replied: "In here... I'm still 20... !"

Joe passed away 5 years later, but his words stuck with me. I am finding them becoming more and more true everyday.

cheers!

It has truly been inspiring reading all of your posts.

I've always thought of musicians as being smart, knowledgeable, and wise, but for some reason I'm still pleasantly surprised when I see it on display. And it makes me proud to be a musician - though just a budding one.

Thanks peeps.

(Baby I've Got You) On My Mind to give you the 'proper' title by Powderfinger.

Remember the way your fingers would bunch up when you first started sliding from one power chord to another? Fun times!

Still great fun to play as well.
