I think the very first one was "With Or Without You" by U2, because I had a song book and it was actually easy for me to play.

Great choice for a first song to learn on your own.

I haven't seriously considered learning a song on my own, but hearing everyone's story is inspiring me a bit.

Colonel Sanders was around back then, too???

This made me think for a moment.

It was "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" out of Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method. Although for some reason or other he called it, "Sparkling Stella".

Nice.

I looks like this book is available on Amazon for less than ten bucks.

I'm bettin' many of us learned early, left it, and returned like shimmilou.

In my case, when I was 14, I had a small Framus which came under my 8 year old brother's foot as it sat on the floor when my brother paid me a visit.  I moved on to percussion, dabbling with my friend's Strat, occasionally, when we jammed. Then guitar took a back seat. My mistake.

But, (back to the beginning when my brother snapped the Framus neck) by then I had progressed from 2 nylon strings (no store nearby and the Internet hadn't been invented yet) to 6 strings and 3 chords (C,G, and D). I don't remember my first song, but with my kiss curl and ducktail, along with side burns, and Brylcream, I and my turned up collar learned C, A, F, and G chords for Tell Laura I Love Her. Those 3 and 4 chord progressions became a staple for many songs. I didn't like the corny songs (IMHO) in my first how to play book, so it only got a quick look and that's how I remember it.

Incidentally, current popular song lyrics were available along with favourite bands and artist gossip in a comic/magazine format for a few cents. Of course, you'd have to dodge the dinosaurs to get to the news stands back then too

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

"Sympathy For The Devil" by the Rolling Stones (much to the chagrin of my parents, until I made them listen to the lyrics and prove to me that anything in the song was praising Satan...in the end, they agreed it was more of a cautionary tale).

Pretty simple rhythm line--E/D/A for the verses, a B is thrown in on the chorus.

The toughest part was switching from the E to the D and staying on rhythm, but after about twenty minutes, I was rockin' the rhythm line and singing the lyrics pretty dang well. Months later, I started playing the lead lines to the song.

The first song I learned to play slide guitar on was "Little Red Rooster". I adapted my own arrangement, somewhere between the Stones version found on "Love You Live" and Howlin' Wolf's original.

I think it was Mother by Pink Floyd.

at least that was the first song i remember learning in its entirety and not just a riff from.

This is an easy one for me as I am still learning them !

My very 1st song is Samba Pa Ti by Carlos Santana - chosen because of the hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, unison bends, etc. Also because I've always thought it a kick *ss song to play.

Learning Over the Hills and Far Away on acoustic because of all the chord changes, time changes and well, because it's Zepplin !

Rebel, Rebel by Bowie because although very simplistic, it requires proper timing and technique to get all 16 identical opening rifts consistent.

Learning 3 songs at once may not be everyone's preference, but for me it breaks up the monotony and keeps practice time fresh.

Of course, a lot of my noodling time is spent with several standbys: Daytripper, Smoke on the Water, House of the Rising Sun, Layla, and numerous 12-bar Blues rifts.

cheers!

I am fairly certain it was "Row, row, row your boat".
To start with, using only one chord, then progressing to two, and finally after much pain and suffering, four.

My advice to new players is to start with a C/G7 song (like Tom Dooley or My Darling Clementine), and then proceed from there to the C-Am-Dm-G7 progression, because that opens up for playing hundreds of famous songs.
