This is good timing for me. It may save me from having to sell an amp. I recently bought a lunch box type amp, to take to rehearsals. The difference in levels between the clean channel and the mid dirt channel was way too much. So I replaced the high gain Chinese 12AX7 tube in the V1 slot with a 5751 and it helped a lot. But lately I've been thinking the level change between channels is still too drastic and I might sell the amp and try something else. I'm going to try a 12AY7 in the V1 slot and maybe it will be more workable. I can always add dirt with a pedal.

A good amp is a good amp. It doesn't matter if it's tube, solid state, analog or digital.

However, a good tube amp will last longer, is usually repairable and has greater value (resale or otherwise).

It is usually easier to find a good-sounding tube amp than a good-sounding solid state amp, too.

I do agree that there are no "magic ingredients", but I believe that there are magic combinations of ingredients...

It's nice to be able to tweak a tube amp to your particular likings by changing out tubes. I wouldn't try tweaking a solid state amp. But you're right, if you find a good amp, that works for your style, it doesn't matter what it is.
