Yesterday I was having a back and forth email conversation with a guy about a trade for a Mesa f-50.

As the conversation went on, the guy wanted my Ampeg Superjet, plus $200 for the Mesa. It was tempting, but my gut was telling me "don't do it". I love my Ampeg. It's in perfect condition, has a V30 in it, NOS tubes, and sounds awesome.

But the Mesa being a more valuable amp made it a tempting offer. Before deciding, I browsed Craigslist (pretty much out of habit anymore) and came across an ad I couldn't pass up.

Now I'm seeing double.

The ad was for a Roland JC 50 for $225. It took me all of 30-seconds to call the guy. I've been looking for another decent JC 50 for a few years now.

If you know the JC models, there's something interesting about the 50. It's the only one that doesn't have a mid knob, or high treble knob. The 50 sounds different than any of the other models. I think it's the best sounding of all of the JCs. I could never even get a 120 to sound quite like a 50.

So now, I have a sure backup to my main gigging amp, and can have the stereo chorus feature of a 120 if I ever wanted to by linking the two together.

Very happy with this purchase. Seriously, look at the prices of JCs nowadays. $225 was a great deal.

So I emailed the guy with the Mesa, and told him I'll keep my Ampeg. I'd rather have a Superjet and a JC than a F-50. And I'm going to love hooking up the 2 JCs together. It's a nice feature by Roland to be able to do it through the front end.

Interesting about the JC series.

I traded a Sunn Solarus for a JC 120 once - a great amp for keybds.

Probably the most interesting thing about this setup is, I have 2 independently controllable speeds and depths to the stereo chorus. Something you can't do with a 120.

People don't generally hold the 50 to the same regard as a 120. But if you think about it, because of that, you'll pay less to acquire 2-JC 50's than you will a 120. In the end, I paid $375 to get these 2. Years apart, but worth the patience.

You did well on that amp shred6! I am a fan of the 50's too. I parted with one several years ago and still miss it. I am also very partial to my JC90, the twin 10's have a sound all their own. Tighter sound than the 12's of a 120.
Nice score dude! That's a beautiful pair for sure, enjoy using them stereo...bet they'll sound good.

Forgot to ask, I notice there is no metal dust cap on the speaker on the amp on the left side. What kind of speaker is in it if I can ask?

Yea, that speaker blew years ago. That was my touring amp. It has a Celestion V30 in it. I've tried a few speakers in it. V30, Eminence Red White and Blues, Ampeg, Celestion 70/80. My favorite for it was a B-52 AT-12 speaker. Those speakers were great sounding. But that amp blew 2 of them. It didn't like the mismatch of 16-ohms( Or rather the other way around). Have to use an 8ohm.

Not sure what I'll use for the other one yet. The 70/80 actually pairs well with a V30. But I might go with another Eminence. Possibly Swamp Thang.

I really like the ease of use with them. They take pedals great right through the front. It makes it so easy to set up at showtime.

90% of the time, all I had to do was Bass and treble at noon, guitar into the pedal board, out to the front of the amp. Tune up and go. Usually about a 10-minute set up time for me.

My last band was really good at that. We used to pride ourselves on being able to set up and tear down really fast. It got us more gigs. Sound guys and venues LOVE that. We didn't fidget, we paid close attention to the sound guy, and ready for showtime in 15-minutes.

For a 6-member band, that's pretty damn good.
