Thought might be a fun topic.

I've seen guitar picks, a folded up Jack of Clubs, and strips of what looked like a build sheet.

I always replace with hardwood veneer.

Found a dime once that somebody had thinned down with a bench grinder.

A folded post-it note.

Part of an adult playing card, folded up.

Had a friend who told me (though I didn't see it) that someone used two wood kitchen matches. That might have been okay if they were safety matches but not the case. He told me that the matches had clearly ignited at some point, though they did little damage. Maybe the original owner was going for an Inside Out Hendrix act?

Not a neck shim, but I've put an off cut from a high E string under one end of an acoustic guitar saddle, and folded up paper under nuts the odd time. Okay for a quick fix.

One of those staples used for cardboard shipping boxes with the ends cut off.

A sliver of a metro card. My thoughts were that the material would not compress at all let alone unevenly. The thickness however was a hair too much.

Best shim ever that I had the most success with in my amateur job was a slice from the clear plastic cover on the office phone at my tech bench at work. It was just the right thickness for perfect action on that setup. I lost that shim though. Now I have a piece of the card from the fender packaging that one of my pots came with. It's no clear plastic office phone directory cover but it seems ok.
