Man, it's been a good week!

On my way home from work, I stopped by one of my local pawn shops, and found a Fulltone OCD.

I know they've been around a while, but I'd never really heard one or tried one out. With the amps I have, I hadn't been very interested. But for $50, I was interested. Looks brand new.

I did what I always do. Open it up! See what's going on under the hood!

I always take pics of that. And I found out it's a V 1.4. Cool. Whatever. Plug it in. Then I did the other thing I always do. Plug it into my JC 50.

This thing ROCKED!! Very cool pedal!!

I jammed for a bit. Checked more info on the net, and came by a mod for a V 1.4. It described how people really didn't like the amount of fizz in the gain. And that gain was due to a part in the output section that was added to V 1.4, and that it should be dismantled, and jumpered.

I listened to the pedal again, and he was right. So about an hour after having the pedal, I did the mod.

This thing really came to life. What a great freaking pedal. I'd always heard they were good pedals, and it lives up to the hype. Especially after taking that diode thing out.

I own one...

You can skip the mod and just go with the 18vdc POWER UNIT !!

It really makes it come alive !!

cheers!!

My V1.2 absolutely rips with eighteen volts.

Yea, I'll definitely try that.

The mod is a done deal. It seriously made a difference. It's not a mod for all versions, but for this one, it was good advice. The description says it makes it sound like an upgraded V3.

I love mine, too- though I'm not sure what version it is. It gives me just about everything I need, sounds awesome, and is extremely amp-like in the way it reacts to my playing. I use this pedal around 90% of the time when I want some stomp dirt. (and don't feel like futzing around with my amp looking for another tone)

It was the first pedal I ever bought. I've bought a fair bunch of dirt pedals since, inc a Plimsoul, and all of them sit in a drawer not getting used... The only exception is a 78 distortion that I use to add that "cooking Marshall Plexi" vibe to some lead tones. I could have just saved my money, as I managed to get it right the first time.

I still GAS for a couple of specific dirt pedals, but I'm in no hurry.

a RAT ( because everyone needs one, right lol); and a
Fulltone '69 Fuzz. ( right out of the box, it gave me the exact fuzz tone I wanted.)

I do see an Aqua $@!& in my future, and would love a go at a Boss Terra Echo, but I'm pretty satisfied with my pedal set up as is.

Fulltone recently reintroduced their germanium-powered Soul Bender. You might give it a look-see.

Congratulations on your new pedal. The OCD truly is one of the great ones.

I agree with the overwhelming consensus that this pedal rocks. As some have have mentioned, running it at 18v really does make a significant difference. It was the first distortion pedal I ever purchased and remains the only one that's passed the test of time. The OCD coupled with a slightly dirty two knob dod fx50 for boost is all I need. I don't think I will ever part with my OCD.

Enjoy.

So what does the 18v do? I've read that it gives it more headroom before clipping.

The mod I did took out the high fizz, which I like a lot better.

The pedal has more balls with the 18VDC power supply and the S/N ratio is improved.

Well.. If I find a Plimsoul for $50, I'll gladly take a listen.

I'm not really in the hunt for distortion pedals. I definitely have no shortage of Distortion at my disposal. That's kind of why I did the mod on the OCD. I wanted it to be more like an OD than Dist.

To be honest, the OCD sounds better than the Ampeg when I push it into power tube Dist. That says a lot about it. If I were sporting the Ampeg live, I'd use the OCD as the OD channel, and just keep the amp on clean.

When I plug it into the Roland JC, it does sound like a tube amp to me. It's not like the Heidkamp, but very impressive.

When I have the time, I'm going to do a side by side listen between the OCD and the Xotic AC+. That should be an interesting shootout.

I bought that pedal at the same pawn shop a while ago for the same price. Love that store!!
