I remember back in the 60's one could purchase a Mosrite Ventures guitar. I had thought about buying one one as I loved the tone, but didn't quite like the narrow neck. I was surprised tonight to see a guitar made by Jay Turser available at GC- The Jay Turser Venture's Mach 1 model. Does anyone know anything about this guitar and Jay Turser guitars.

Don't know anything about the knock-offs, but here's an original '65 Mosrite Ventures

Very Cool !!

Originals are pretty rare because production ceased when Mosrite failed to pay the Ventures the royalties due, so very few were made, though many knock-offs have been produced through the years.

cheers!

Thanks for providing the video and link. It's a shame they stopped making them. I remember playing one, but I didn't buy it because of how narrow the neck was. He was right about them being rare. I guess $5000 is a fair price for a 65 especially because of how rare they are. For me, I'll just have to fantasize. :D

I'll answer my own question regarding the Jay Turser knock-off. I read two customer reviews. Even though they liked how cool the guitar looked, one guy had to glue back the nut, and the other guy had issues with a loose neck. Nice  :!: . Thanks Jay Turner, but no thanks. Up until I saw the Venture's model for sale, I had never heard of this manufacturer. Talk about buyer beware.

Wilson Brothers also made a version of the Mosrite:

Jay Turser is an entry level guitar. I purchased one of their old Surfmasters on eBay a week or so before Will Ray of Premier Guitar featured it on Bottom Feeder. It's fun to own. The only problem was I had to enlarge the holes in the pickguard to mount the bridge on the body instead of on top of the pickguard. The action was way too high. Everything else about the guitar is only acceptable. Their Mosrite copy does look good though, doesn't it? Too bad it doesn't have the Bart Simpson haircut headstock of the original.

A friend of mine has a Ventures guitar by Hallmark
http://www.hallmarkguitars.com/guitars/60-custom.shtml
It's a pretty nice repro, plays and sounds really nice. It's a bit more than Turser, but in my opinion worth it. Turser is just an entry level guitar with marginal hardware and electronics. Not a bad entry level guitar, just nothing special. I've tried a bunch of Jay Turser mostly because I like cheapo guitars. I'm not sure if Eastwood has any repros, but their prices are in between Turser and Hallmark.

I've been looking at a number of these Mosrite copies, and I think you've hit on one that not only looks very close to the original Mosrite, but pretty well sounds like one to. I watched a few of this guy pound out a few songs on the Hallmark, but I like this one the best. A good old surfing song - Reef Break.

Thanks, 63Supro for pointing out the Hallmark, and to you F-Stop for Ernst's video. Nothing wrong with the tone of that guitar IMHO, and he does a great job playing a song I was not familiar with. Great addition. I don't have one in my hands so I can't, obviously, tell about the build, but for what it's worth, (and it appears to be a good value especially with the designers' association), it looks and sounds to be a decent alternative to the Ventures' Mosrite. Works for me.

You're welcome. Yes, real nice tone. Perhaps there are many who haven't heard that song, as it was originally recorded by an Australian group called the Atlantics. I've heard the song before, but only since watching the video did I see the group associated with it. Here's the original. Unfortunately there's no video with it.

Here's a more recent video of them playing it unplugged.

Cheers

F-Stop: Again, thanks for The Atlantic's postings. Having grown up on the Pacific Rim (on the opposite side of the pond from Australia, and as a neighbour to The Ventures, give or take about a hundred miles), I did know about the band, but more for Bombora and other songs. I missed Reef Break somehow. If one doesn't know this band, check 'em out for sure. The Atlantics are some of the best Surf musicians around.

aussie aussie aussie oy oy oy :D

Although, the following guitars are not Ventures' specific, I found this comparison interesting and, perhaps, relative, somewhat with Hallmark, Fullerton, and Mosrite examples.

May the surf be with you. 8)

Cool thread F-Stop. I remember test driving a couple of Mosrites at the local guitar store back in the day. Killer looks, vibrant colors, space age design. The necks were awkward but the bottom line for me was if I had that money I'd have bought a new Fender Jaguar. The Ventures looked good holding them lol. :D

I loved that. That was one of my faves from the Venture's surfing album. I can't remember if they recorded that using Strats or Mosrites. I liked the guitar comparisons, but I have to say that I couldn't tell the difference in tone. But I did prefer the last model based on the fact it was a Mosrite and I preferred the finish.

Trivia: How many members were there in the band and who were they? Don't feel bad if you don't know.

Cheers

May the surf be with you too. By the way, I did try surfing back in the 70's in Galveston TX. Hardest thing I ever tried. I probably managed a 3 second stand at best.

Thanks! I'm with you on the neck. I had a hard time with it as well. It was way too thin - well, for me it was. I might have bought one if it wasn't for that. You're right about the Ventures looking good holding them, and they sure sounded good playing them.

Cheers

There's also this: http://www.mosrite-guitars.com/home This company is run by the daughter of Semie Moseley, who of course built the original guitars. She's also a luthier. Eastwood is another company that makes copies of these, too. http://www.eastwoodguitars.com/

FSB: 4? Nokie Edwards, Bob Bogle, Don Wilson, and Mel Taylor - but others have followed; of course you could add the girls on the album covers

The closest surfing in my neck of the woods was just a rumour at first. Then, in my highschool years, we started to see a few boards on cars, but found the spot was isolated, some distance away, and you could only get there by a large boat because of open ocean. So I was stuck with my snorkelling (not so bad), and, perhaps, a paddle board (just kidding) Later, I moved away from the coast and, wouldn't you know it, a terrific road was built and now it's a surfing Mecca (particularly in the winter months). I became too old to skateboard so I'm content to play surf music (and other genres) in a place with little history or love for it. That's okay, because R&B (not Blues) and Jazz takes a back seat too. You are lucky to have tried surfing F-stop, now no one can call you a hodad. :)

How did a band from the Pacific get to be called The Atlantics?
