Another good How-To from StewMac:

Especially like the tips about avoiding magnets and soldering guns (making a case for solder stations).

cheers !

Thanks for that Lightnin. Another great example for using your ears, and your personal preference to attain your sound. :D

Back in the day, we'd use a soldering gun as a makeshift degaussing coil on colour CRT monitors. They worked great and cleared 'em right up when handled correctly.
Meaning: "Degaussing your pickups is bad, m'kay?"

Two completely different animals.

You need the poles of the pickup to be magnetized to create the magnetic field surrounding the strings. When the strings move through this field (vibrate), they create a weak electrical charge in the pickup windings which is then passed on to the amplifier. You need this magnetic field.

Since this field is created by the poles, which, are permanent magnets, exposure to magnets (with opposite polarity) or a solder gun, will de-magnetize them and alter, reduce or eliminate any electrical signal they can produce.

In a CRT OTOH, especially a color CRT, the electron beams produced by the electron guns are passed through a 'shadow mask' - a metal plate with tiny holes. The shadow mask ensures that each beam will only hit spots of certain colors or phosphors on the screen face.

If this mask becomes magnetized, the electron beams can converge on the same spot (or phosphors) or on the wrong spot (different color) creating what are called convergence or color purity problems.

To avoid this, a weak degaussing coil is built into each CRT and is energized briefly when the tube is first turned on to remove any possible magnetic charge on the mask.

But, over time in use, and due to many factors, the mask can regain a magnetic charge and an external degaussing coil is then used to remove the shadow mask magnetization to clear the screen or re-establish proper color.

In other words, you're only de-magnetizing (or degaussing) the mask. Since the electron guns are electro-magnets, not permanent, they are unaffected.

cheers!

:? And that's the bad thing I was talking about.

But the soldering gun is the same electromagnet in both cases. One side effect (no music) is bad, the other side effect (better colour) is good. I was using it as an illustration of the strength of the magnetic field from a soldering gun; i.e. that it was almost as good as a purpose-built demagnetizing tool.

I do agree that the word "gun" in electron gun is merely a coincidence, if that's what you were getting at.
