I just came across this earlier this morning. It appealed to me because I had once owned a '57 Tele. Bare in mind the quality of the video isn't what one would expect, but to see the factory in operation back then is quite interesting. Enjoy:

Cheers

That was . . . neat.

They weren't very big on personal protective equipment, were they?
I saw no gloves, no dust masks, no fume hoods, and the one pair of goggles I saw was pushed up on the guy's forehead.

Well, it was the 50's. Practically everyone still smoked and also thought duck and cover would save your arse in case the Commies nuke us. :P The funny thing was they still had those drills when I was in elementary school in the mid to late 70's.

Boy that brings back memories. Hide under your desk and all will be fine, and we believed it too.

What was also hilarious is they still had sex ed films from the 60's in class, too. Then again, it was roughly 10 years old or so. I remember some film they went "Tommy smokes some grass." Tommy, you're such a hippy. :P I wonder what happened to Tommy? Probably got drafted and sent to Vietnam, or had to go to prison for possession. Something like that.

No OSHA back then! My grandmother worked in a knitting mill and told me that workers got injured all the time. Even worse ... legal at the time ... they'd be docked if they left their work area to go to the company nurse. State passed a law in around 56 saying that workers had to have water and salt pills available in summer, but no mention of either being free. Employers in that industry rarely fixed equipment until it could no longer be operated at full capacity. They didn't give a flip if safety features had fallen off or failed as long as the machine itself still ran. Hopefully Fender was more humane but I think it was more accepted back then that manufacturing work was dangerous.

I remember the air raid drills too. My school was about a mile from an air base so that would have done us no good. Rome, NY also had several key manufacturing operations at the time, so it's a good guess that the area was targeted, between industry and the B-52 base.

And that's why we could manufacture quality products in the USA, now with all the road blocks imposed, manufacturing has gone to other countries with less regulations.
