generally speaking i run Ernie Ball slinky strings (lime green package - 10s). never had any issue with them... i often by the blammo box of them to get the price break. I went to order them today and thought why not go with the super slinky strings this time (the pink package 9 gauge).

Would this matter? does the gauge make that big of a difference? i have played from 8s through 11s and must admit i am not pro enough to really notice too much difference. thoughts/opinions?

as a quick add on i realize that most of this is personal preference as to what brand, what gauge... etc. Just looking for any glaring "DO NOT USE..." when jumping sizes. I have a feeling the 9s will be just fine, but i wanted to check with you guys as i value your opinions a great deal. thanks!

Your guitar's set-up *may* need to be tweaked when switching string gauges, especially the intonation and the trem claw (if the instrument is a Strat). One size down (or up) should have only minimal effect if any on your neck's relief.

It can be a big difference, and you might not like it.

10s aren't exactly high tension cables, but when I pick up something with 9s on it, they sort of go "plink"...

i remember playing the 8s on a SG and they felt so light and bendy, almost too much. My main guitars are a strat deluxe, an electromatic jet pro and a fender jaguar special HH (from japan).

I'll give you more to ponder. On my Strats I find 10's a little too stiff for my old fingers. I use DiAddario Nickel Wound 9.5's. It makes just enough of a difference without getting too loose feeling.

Do you get those 3 pack specials with that gauge? American Musical Supply has those, that's pretty much why I've use that gauge when I use Ernie Balls and I have three guitars to string up.

i get a box of 12 packs of them for $42 from Musicians Friend. I run through a case every 2 years give or take (often they are on guitars i rebuild or work on for other people) i am a sad case of i fix em better than i play them.

Thanks for the input one and all, as a quick follow up... i ordered the super slinky 9s. I still have a few packs of the slinky 10s around.... i will experiment and if i seriously hate them i will only use the super slinky on restorations or rebuilds. Not like i am out a ton of money if i truly hate them. Might even be a case of they feel better on some of the guitars but not others.

I've been experiencing that as well -- old fingers and minimal time to practice -- so I've switched the Strats I use for rock/rock-blues to EB 9s. I still have 10s on the one I use more for Jazz/melody type playing and I'm resisting going to 9s on the Teles.

Hey, I can't really do either, especially fix them. :P My thing is bass, but I do try to putter around on guitar ever so often for various purposes. It's an instrument I've never felt 100% comfortable playing for some reason, but do it anyway.

Ernie Ball 10's for going on 25 years now...no matter the guitar. Always feel at home with 'em. I tried some EB Super Slinky 9's once...just too thin.

I have used strings ranging in gauge from 8's to 13's (I even tried a set of 15's once) over the years and have found that string gauge does matter to certain guitars. Some guitars seem to play, feel and sound better with a specific gauge of strings. Currently I have guitars with 9's, 9.5's, 10's, and 11's.

for me it makes a big difference because I like to bend strings a lot. 9's make bends a little easier on the fingers, but they also break a little easier. So I switched to 10's after a while. Now I play with 9's on my Ibanez (JS model) and 10's on my Epiphone BB King Lucille - I don't really break the 9's anymore these days. Maybe because I don't really bother with the wammy bar anymore.
