I have to get off topic and respond to Lightnin MN dis on unions. I've been happily retired for 11yrs with a very nice pension thanks to my employer and union. I also had a very good work experience for 32yrs, making a decent salary that allowed me to save through the years into retirement. I know many others my age that hate unions and they're still out there "picking s___ with the chickens" because they were left with nothing to fall back on when their expectations and promises made didn't materialize. Wish them well....keep up the good work!
Not to keep the train rolling off track.....but yes; (as a truck driver) you guys are rolling the train (or truck) right off the track. Too many retired guys sucking pension.....and the current drivers feel and live the brunt on both pay and bennies. Stop bragging....you put in your time, but you sucked the well dry too. Thanks

A True member of the 'Hooray for me... and the H*ll with you' Society !!

Well Done !

Ever consider how many of those 'left with nothing to fall back on when their expectations and promises made didn't materialize.' are the result of Unions gaining annual increases not tied to increases in productivity and driving prices up and forcing jobs overseas..??

I realize I'm talking to a Wall here... but I had to get off topic and respond....

cheers!

I grew up in Detroit in the 60's, it was the 5th largest city in the U.S. and the people had one of he highest standards of living in the world. Many like to say it was because of unions, but Henry Ford paid his workers 3 times more than the others, without a union. The smoking hole that is Detroit is from years of union and single party rule. I loved Detroit, when I see it now and remember what it used to be like makes me very sad.

Oh, by the way, I had a good paying job with great benefits and retired at 42 and moved to Florida. I was never in a union.

The only reason I had my union job was because I worked and struggled to get my masters. I can't remember not knowing that strength in numbers rule the universe. Seems like now only the 1% know how true that is, and what an advantage they have! Anyway, I really have no need to be further concerned at my stage in life. I just feel for the workers of this country that have been lead into a position to individually compete with hundreds of millions of young, educated people around the world that would make almost any sacrifice to earn $4hr. Good luck with that, and whatever your position within the majority of us, realize it's bringing down the standard of living.

I am divided with unions. My father was an unionized auto worker that provided for me as a kid. I later started work with some great guys and became a steward on a 6 month strike for work hours that had split shifts from 8am - 4pm, back at 10pm-12pm, and returning the next day to do it all over again each day of the week. It was the only company in the industry in North America (including Mexico) that did those hours of shifting. I was 23 years old, went on strike Thursday, picked up a holiday check on Friday, and got married on Saturday with support from the union, and we all got strike support from locals from Canada, USA, and Mexico. This strike made history through the courts allowing secondary picketing with unions everywhere.

Later in another company I was recruited, not by my own initial choice, to start a union and become president. To even the playing field from radicals, I took the vice president's position.

I made another move cross country and ended up with legal arbitration on my first day of work because the union and employer had a disagreement and I unknowingly had been caught in the middle with no malice from either party. It didn't make the move any easier since I had given up a great job for promises that should not have been made. The meetings with lawyers went on for 3 months. In the end I was given the job, but it was not the best for some time.

One thing you should know about unions. They can work for you, with you, and against you. Your agenda may not be their agenda and backroom deals are made everyday. You may become extinct for someone else for a variety of reasons. If you think they will always be there for you, wait till the company changes hands or the union gets cannabilized by another. You will find yourself on the dinner table. In my case, when layoffs began, my 29 years of union affiliation dissolved.because my present company employment caused 11 year veterans of that company to take precedence (even with my Union and job seniority), so beware.

Still, unions have their place, and some employers find a benefit in having them rather than having individual wants and needs being met.

Just my 2 cents. Now I have to get back to my modern guitar to play some vintage tunes.
