Last night was my final night in New Orleans for JazzFest this year, and what a night it was...

Went to Republic in the warehouse district for the Six Strings Down show featuring: Tab Benoit, Anders Osborne, Samantha Fish and Luther Dickinson.

At the invitation of Corey Duplechin, Tab Benoit's outstanding Bass player, I arrived 90 minutes before the show to have dinner backstage w/ the players. Several other NOLA musicians also stopped by including Dana Abbott, Mia Borders, Sonny Landreth, June Yamagichi and Jon 'Papa' Gros. Most of these guys had shows of their own elsewhere later, but there's something unique about the way NOLA musicians support each other.

An incredible craft table, incl. Fried Chicken, Jambalaya, Red Beans & Rice w/ Andouille and BBQ Shrimp fed everyone well.

Hadn't seen Dana, June or Jon yet this trip, so it was good chatting them up. I'd seen Mia Borders several times, but never met her, so that was great too.

I was really excited to meet Samantha Fish, a relative, yet very talented, newcomer from Kansas City. It was her 2nd visit to New Orleans, and she'll be joining Corey and Tab tomorrow at the Rock n Bowl as well. It's amazing the range of tones she gets from her Tele ! I tell you, if anyone ever expresses concern about the younger generation being 'Keepers of the Flame', all they have to do is spend about 5 min. chatting with this young musician to put their minds at ease. Sam (as she wanted me to call her) is so focused and driven, this 26 y.o. has already made 4 albums, toured Europe, shared the stage with some MONSTER players incl. Buddy Guy, Johnny Lang, Tab Benoit, Ander Osborne, Ana Popovic, Paul Thorn, Mike Zito, Ronnie Earl, Greg & Devon Allman, Albert Castiglia, Tommy Castro and others. If you don't know her, check her out. I'll be seeing Samantha again this Fall at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR w/ Mrs. LMN who's dying to meet her. We exchanged info. and she's invited us to her club gig in Memphis (where we'll be staying) the night before the fest begins !

The show was great ! Tab was dialed-in as usual and really rocked! It was the 2nd time I've seen Anders Osborne and I must say I'd underrated him in the past, he really surprised me. Also the 1st time I'd seen Luther Dickinson, he channeled a lot of Dwayne Allman through his Gibson ES 335 w/ some amazing solo work ! Corey delivered a dynamite performance.

Samantha Fish stole my heart ! She can really rock her Tele w/ hints of Hendrix, Clapton and SRV, this girl can seriously play.

After the show ended, we went to an after party at some agent's house uptown and laughed, danced, drank and played until 5am ! Corey pulled me into a jam... with great reluctance on my part. But Tab ran me through a quick, new to me, 12-bar shuffle, and I played rhythm (as quietly and unobtrusively as possible - ) trying to keep up with the time changes. I'm sure everyone noticed and was laughing on the inside though not showing it, but they were outwardly encouraging and said I was being too hard on myself... just to stick with it. It was all very nice of them, but I felt like a Toddler at a Marathon. Still, it was the most fun I've ever had w/ a guitar in my hands... just wish Mrs. LMN could have seen it !!

So, a nap, a shower, a last meal & cocktail (hair of the Dog) at the Buffa (saying goodbye to as many of our friends there as possible), then it's off to Louis Armstrong Int'l. at 1pm for a 3 o'clock flight back back to Minneapolis, the World and Reality until next year... God willing ! :D

cheers!

Well, we've been very fortunate to meet so many wonderful and talented people over the years.

As I used to live in New Orleans, even though it's going on 30 years now, most locals view it as me returning home rather than being a tourist coming down to raise some hell (which by definition, I am).

Anyone who's spent any real time there will tell you that there isn't another place on the Planet like New Orleans , which is both a Good and Bad thing.

Last year, I took what I believe is the quintessential photograph. It's New Orleans in a nutshell:

cheers!
