We all have our preferences in brands and loyalty to them.

Some folks like Fenders, others Gibsons, and others go for Jacksons or Ibanez. Different guitars for different tastes, styles and sounds of music.

No reason to be called a snob about it.

i was never a clicky person so i never follow'd

the approval of others.

Well said.
That is really stupid that he would call you a snob for liking Fender. It's just...UGH. I don't know. It's annoying when people do things like that. It just goes to show you that The Power Chord King was right when he said, "FENDER PLAYERS ARE THE NICEST PEOPLE I KNOW!" But just don't let it get to ya. If he don't like ya cuz ya play Fenders that's his problem and it's his loss, cuz he's missin out on playin one of the best guitar brands!!!

I'm sure that there are people that are stuck on a brand name AND/OR a particular model JUST because of the brand name or the particular model-or don't want to look like an idiot because they paid an insane amount of money for something 'famous' or 'iconic'. But I think that most experienced players and owners aren't that hung up on that.

Musicians aren't necessarily 'snobbish', you can check out back issues of guitar magazines and find that some guitarists change endorsements almost yearly. But I think that guitarists especially are some of the most conservative people on the planet when it comes to gear. Many bassists play what I call 'butcher block' basses (the ones made out of multiple laminates and exotic woods) that not many guitarists would probably touch if they had an option to get a guitar built that way. Guitarists seem to like tradition rather than innovation because it works for them, also, why fix what ain't broke? I'm that way.

There have been innovations that worked, with help-if EVH hadn't turned guitar based music on it's head in the late '70's, would the Floyd Rose trem have gotten much attention? Granted, Leo Fender was an innovator, but his designs have become the standard for that type of guitar. I don't see many people playing Parkers.

I think that Fenders and Gibsons are two distinctly different animals, I love Fenders and have a few, but if I want a good 'Gibson' sound I play a Hamer USA (now owned by Fender, BTW) model. I once had a Gibson LP Standard, then bought a Hamer USA Archtop Custom (which was based roughly on the LP design), and did some comparison playing. The Gibson LP Standard went away pretty quickly, it just sounded dead compared to the Hamer. I haven't looked back at Gibson since.

You would think the Gibson player would be the snob, at least that's been my experience. Even Clapton (before he got Fender religion) went for the Gibson because he thought he should play a "proper guitar". Apparently, a proper guitar is one manufactured by a company whose roots go back to a 19th century mandolin maker.

According to Clapton's bio, his first electric was a cheap es335 clone about a tenth of the price of the real thing. He already had a dream guitar in his mind.

Cheers.

The low end LP is over a grand. Unless you go eppi. I can still get a "Fender" for under 600 and a nice one at that. So....who are the snobs here?

My point was that Gibson is an old and venerable company that makes (made?) instruments "the old fashioned way". I think there were some players who looked down at Fenders, especially in the early days of the company, because they were assembled from parts and didn't look like hand-crafted instruments. I think that's part of the reason Leo couldn't sell the Jazzmaster to the jazz players of the day.

I wasn't dumping on mandolins if that's what you thought.

I think a big part of the "snobbery" problem is phrases like that one - "Fender religion."

They're guitars. No need to worship them or the corporations that make them.

Not blaming you, Steve, just the devotion people have to companies that don't really care.

Maybe it was a poor choice of words. How about "before he saw the light". Better?

I see a lot of snobbery here, and at the Gibson forum. People have a psychological need to make whatever they own the best.

Really, the Epiphone forum is the most neutral, though we're forced to talk about Epiphone guitars almost exclusively.

I happen to have a Fender, a Gibson, a Squier, and an Epiphone.

I marked that up to comment-I agree on the first point--unfortunately there are people who seem to have a need to put down other people or things so that they look better by comparison--but that's a faulty reasoning. Maybe, both of you or both your stuff is crap. :D

As to the second point--I too have both Fender & Gibson--why not? I like both. I recently saw an Epi I really liked, and am considering buying--it's a bit different than anything else I have--of course someone else might buy it first, but some of their current stuff is quite nice.[/i]

It's obscured a person that owns a Gibson could just as easily own a fender!

I mean I started off with Gibson and I'm now in the market for a Strat or possibly a fender side line product.. Gretsch! :D
