Founding member of the Kingsmen, and lead singer on the hit "Louie, Louie", Jack Ely passed away Tuesday @ age 71.

Due to Jack's religious beliefs, he never sought treatment for, or diagnosis of, an apparent illness according to his son.

R.I.P. Jack... thanks for the Music !!

cheers!

Robert Kennedy was contacted by irate parents after which the FBI investigated, and then dropped the case when they could not figure out the lyrics (at any speed).

Today it wouldn't even be an issue.

RIP Jack.
Your contribution to music will live on.

R.I.P. Jack and thank you for recording the song that helped get a five day suspension from Maine South High School for me during the school president election campaign's in 1964.
My band was playing a set for one of the candidate's in a large hallway at school. I was doing my best imitation of Jack's vocal, the kids were dancing and having a good time when a couple of teachers walked up and told us to stop playing then escorted me to the deans office where I got a five day suspension for singing Louie Louie, a song they said was obscene.
When I balked and asked what part was obscene they just pushed me out of the front door and said "don't return without a note from your parents". Explaining to my parents was the hard part but worth it because every five years at our high school reunions at least one of my classmates will come up to me and recall that day lol.
Jack, I love that, innocently notorious. Most of my classmates don't remember who threw the winning touchdown or who hit the winning home run that year, but who was kicked out of school for singing Louie Louie, yours truly

Of course there are many variations of these:

Louie Louie, oh no
Sayin' we gotta go, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Said Louie Louie, oh baby
Said we gotta go

A fine little girl, she waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home

Louie Louie, oh no no no
Sayin' we gotta go, oh no
Said Louie Louie, oh baby
Said we gotta go

Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, all constantly
On that ship I dream she's there
I smell the rose in her hair

Louie Louie, oh no
Sayin' we gotta go, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Said Louie Louie, oh baby
Said we gotta go
Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!

See, see Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
I'll tell her I'll never leave again

Louie Louie, oh no
Sayin' we gotta go, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Said Louie Louie, oh baby
Said we gotta go

I said we gotta go now
Let's take this on outta here
Let's go!

Oh that is bad news R.I.P. Jack Ely.
I think every band in the world played Louie Louie. I remember the band I was in at the time, I was the rhythm player but that tune was my big moment, my time to shine and I played a solo that went on forever. The vocalist would give me the top half of his mic stand to use as a slide and I think ( but I might be wrong ) that we used a violin bow before Jimmy Page. They were wild, great days and it's thanks to songs and groups like the Kingsmen that they were so.
Another one down, we seem to be losing a lot lately but we are all getting that age now. Us from that era.
