I always see people on gear forums using smaller amps for small gigs but I've seen shows in basements where the smallest rig was a full stack

So true. In my younger years, a couple of guys I worked with, including a bonafide credited songwriter, were into making an LP, and their genres leaned toward Punk and Heavy Metal. I was asked if I could bring my traps over to the house and sit in with them for a rehearsal in a cramped basement. Well, needless to say I took few breaks and found myself sitting beside a Hiwatt stack. The volume was cranked, but I didn't think much of it.

The next morning I found blood on my pillow and from my ear, I had a mild freakout (as I and a friend, some years before, lost our hearing for a day when nearby warship's deck guns went off unannounced - but, that's another story). The next day, after the rehearsal, I found myself at an ear specialist. I was told it wasn't just the volume that did temporary damage, thankfully, but it was the constant sound over a period without a break that allowed the ear's hammer to keep pounding inside my head. Lesson learned.

The reggae band I was in was booked to do a Heavy Metal all day festival. Not sure how we got on that one, but every band had half stacks.

The show was booked at Crazy Horse 3 (strip club). The venue was a bar attached to the strip club with a wall separating the two.

When we showed up, and they found out we were a Reggae band, they put us to go on last at midnight.

When the time came to unload our gear, the promoter says "Where are your amps?"

We had 2- Fender 85 Solid State Red Kob amps. He was FURIOUS! Started yelling at our other singer "I SPECIFICALLY SAID IN YOUR EMAIL, NO PRACTICE AMPS!"

So I cut in on the conversation, and said "Hey man, these aren't practice amps. We're here, we go on in 20-minutes, just let us play, and you can yell all you want when we're done."

We got 1-song into our set, and all of these strippers came strolling into the bar. Next thing we know, they're giving lap dances in the crowd. When the set was done, they were screaming at us to keep going. We played another set and finally ended.

After the show, the strip club owner offered us a weekly gig. We emptied half of his club, but his strippers made a KILLING! They banked! They certainly made more than we did.

The Owner of the strip club said," I came down stairs, and half my strippers are gone!"

The promoter couldn't believe it. We blew away every Heavy Metal band in town.

With Fender SS Red Knob 85's. Hahaha.. Man that was a fun night.
