I've been seeing many using Quilter amps for club gigs
and despite being non-tube amps, they have a decent sound.

So what amp do you use for smaller club gigs?

I still like using my Pro Jr with an extension 1-12" cab.

I vacillate between:
1) Tweed Dlx (5E3) clone head
2) Blues Jr. converted to a head
3) Blackstar HT20H
4) Fender Supersonic 22 head
Through one of the following 2X12 cabs:
a) Mojotone horizontal slant w/ Swamp Thang and a Wizard
b) Lopoline vertical slant w/ V30 and a G12H55
c) Seismic horizontal w/ WGS Reaper 30 and Retro HP
d) Fender HRDlx Tweed Extension 1X12 Cab.

Yeah, I'm fickle and can never stay with one choice for longer than 3 to 6 months. The above gives lots of choices, but bandmates say I always sound very much the same to them. I hear subtle differences, but they think not-so-much. I also rotate between guitars.

We always mic for control of stage volume, then deliver what's needed foh via the PA.

Haven't played an actual gig in over a year now but my Rivera has a half power switch so I'd still use it. Without the extension cab though. It does slightly change the tone of the amp and I'm not just talking about clean head room. There's a slight difference in the loose-vs-tight aspect when it breaks up. Key word is slight.

For smaller gigs I use half my rig. Acoustic 300 bass head through Peavey 2/15" bass cabinet (Eminence Legends).

I bought a Carvin V3m tube amp. It weighs 19#'s, is half the size of a full head. It has 3 channels, reverb, boost, good foot switch, loop, direct out. It's easy to carry around and reasonably priced. I have a 1x12 and 2x12 cabinet I can take. I'm real happy with it so far.
It's 50w, so there's plenty of clean head room. I can get a nice shimmer in the clean channel.

I'm still favoring one of my "Spankmaster Reverb" amps......

Image

It's a 20-watt Deluxe Reverb chassis, shoe-horned into a custom-made cabinet and mated to a 15-inch JBL D130F.

Traditional Fender tube tone, plenty loud, and very portable.

Small gigs would call for either my Mustang III or IV. Easy on, easy off, lots of options, not a lot of extra cables, cords or power concerns. Very handy for multi-band situations

Does it sound as good as one of my tube combos with the pedal board? nope, I won't lie to ya. but does it sound good? yep! It sure does.

I haven't gigged since I got new amps. In fact, the last time I did a show was before I got my Rumble 350 combo, and that was the reason I got that amp in the first place. So it's been three years, but I have a feeling it won't be long before there will be some shows again. Now I have the Orange Terror Bass 1000 rig, I'll be using that, since it's extremely portable and my 18" speaker cab isn't much more to handle carrying than the Fender to begin with. Besides, I love the sound of my Schecter J Bass through it.

I also have a 1982 Fender Super Champ for when I play guitar that I've never used live yet (I've only played guitar live once, besides bass.) Although, I'm a little skittish about gigging with it since it's in very excellent/maybe near mint condition and always been a house amp. I've seen other models of this amp go for over a $1000 and they are a lot more beat up than this amp could be. I guess that makes me want to baby it and not get dinged up by toting it around to gigs. Then again, it's a tool for a job and that's what it's designed for so I shouldn't worry about it so much.

I use this, my Traynor YCV40WR.

Most small clubs would crap their pants if I brought this instead.

If I had a paying gig, I would use my Hot Rod Deluxe (Clean channel only) with a pedal board in front. That way I can get all of the tones I like from that amp at almost any volume level. I also have an Egnater Tweaker 15 watt head which I put into an open back cab 1-12 with an EVM12L in it. And it almost rivals the HRD for tone. The HRD however has a road case which wheels like a big suitcase. So it is one trip in/out with the guitar and pedal board on top of the road case.

Vox AC-15 is good enough for smaller venues, and can easily be hauled by an old man like yours truly. Good enough for things like workplace parties (don't scoff - I'm sure I'm not the only one...).
It's also affordable, and I won't be ruined if it breaks.

That said, I do prefer the sound of my Orange Rocker 30 for not overly loud sounds, but it's much heavier, uglier, and needs five minutes instead of twenty seconds before it sounds good. And it's picky about tubes, for allegedly being "self-biasing". It loves funkens and hates tungs.

Swapping out the stock Celestion for an Eminence Texas Heat makes that one a screamer!

Does your Vox have the alnico blue or celestion?

The amp I used for most gigs was the Roland JC-50, 1x12 version (w/effects). Still have it, and won't get rid of it.

I've gone through a few JCs. The 120, the 77, and landed with the 50.

The deal is this. The other 2-speaker models do have true stereo chorus, but I never used it. I don't particularly like chorus.

But what really makes the difference is the 50 doesn't have a mid knob or high treble knob. Somehow Roland set the mid in the perfect sweet spot. It's crazy, but I like it better than a JC-120, and it's one of the least expensive JCs you can buy in the used market.

With a Celestion V-30, it has a very bluesy sound. Hangs with my tube amps. And it takes pedals extremely well through the front.

I could never get the 120 to sound like the 50. The extra eq pots just make it different. And in my opinion, worse, if you can believe it.

All AC-15 versions are Celestion - greenback, creamback or blue, respectively. I have the cheaper greenback version (AC15C1). Buying used, I didn't get to pick, but at $350, I didn't mind.

I may swap it out for a Heritage if I find a good shape used one - just a bit more low end punch. But I won't bother paying $200 for a new speaker :)
