Woke up a little 'shaky' today after yesterday's Opening Day JazzFest.

While the lineup this year is spectacular as usual, it is stacked more toward the 2nd. weekend this year. We always have to leave before then because of the Player's Championship (Mrs. LMN's gig).

No matter, started out yesterday seeing Johnny Sansone deliver an amazing set - his tone on the Harp is piercing! Next up was the Tedeschi Trucks Band who really pleased the crowd. She can seriously play !

Finished the day split between Keith Urban (who did some dynamite guitar work on his Tele) and Jimmie Vaughn & Tilt-a-Whirl.

The real fun at JazzFest is after dark in the Clubs after the festival is closed for the night. After some incredible Creole food at Pascal Manales - Fresh Oysters and a Soft-shell Crab w/ a Crawfish Etouffee on top, Mrs. LMN and I headed over to the Rock n Bowl to catch Tab Benoit's opening set, then off to the Maple Leaf @ 10pm to see Sonny Landreth.

Sonny was just unloading his van when we walked up so we greeted him and I helped carry a couple of his guitars to the stage. We had just seen Sonny a couple months ago in Mpls. and he told us to meet him at the break 'cause he had some friends coming he wanted us to meet. At the break, we headed for the Green Room and were the first ones there. We waited about 5 min. when a guy came to the door carrying a bottle of wine and asked if we were waiting for Sonny. We said yes and he came in held out his hand and in a gruff voice said "Hey... I'm "Mac"...". I was stunned, he was Mac alright - "Mac"Rebennack, aka Dr. John !! Just then Sonny appeared and said "I see you guys met..." Mrs. LMN was still in shock I think. Anyway, several others joined us and we had some wine, then Sonny left for the 2nd set w/ Dr. John joining him midway through. After we all sat and had some wine until 3:30am when we cabbed it back to our place.

Today, the weather is threatening so we have our Hefty Lawn Bags (JazzFest Raincoats). While you haven't been baptized until you've done JazzFest in the mud, if the weather threatens too much, we'll use our In/Out passes and go across the street to the Jockey Lounge to wait out the storm.

We're having lunch backstage of the Blues Tent w/ our friend Walter 'Wolfman' Washington before his set, then we're catching Sonny again backstage around 4pm. Robert Cray is scheduled right after Sonny and we're all gonna stay and meet him (at Sonny's invitation) & watch his set before drifting back to the Main Stage to see the closing act - the Who.

Tonite we're at the Rock n Bowl to see Eric Lindell and Big Sam's Funky Nation !

cheers!

Yep... it's our annual vacation (though we do also often travel for one of the holidays - Thanksgiving, Xmas or New Years).

This is the 46th JazzFest and I've been to 27 of them. I lived in New Orleans for a few yrs. back in the '80s, and have been going pretty much every year since. I know the city like a native and we have many friends there, incl. many local musicians who we visit each year.

We have a friend w/ a 200 y.o. Creole Cottage right outside the French Quarter (2 Blks.). He winters in Paris and doesn't return until May, so he lets us use his place. Mrs. LMN gets about 300k airmiles annually because of her job, so we fly for free. We just have to pay for food, booze and music - that still runs a couple grand for the 2 weeks.

But the lineup is always amazing... to see so many acts in one place.

There will be few pics because I don't own a cellphone and hate carrying a camera all over.

cheers!

Saturday at JazzFest was one of the best days we ever spent there!

Started out meeting our old friend Walter 'Wolfman' Washington. He's had a great year being nominated for several awards - Best Blues Performer, Best R&B/Funk Artist and Best Guitarist. Walter and his Roadmasters Howlin Live at d.b.a. has also been nominated in the Best R&B/Funk Album category.

Hadn't seen Walter since he came through Mpls. last summer, and he was all aglow over the birth of his little girl last month, rolling through a few dozen pics of her on his smartphone. Now, Walter is 72 years old. Some years ago, Mrs. LMN asked him how he got the name 'Wolfman'? Walter replied: " 'cause I gots 10 children..." Well now he's got twelve... It's always great seeing him and his set in the Blues Tent was incredible !

Since it was raining sporadically, after a great lunch, incl. Gumbo and Crawfish Monica, we decided just to hangout backstage in the Blues Tent. Sonny arrived soon after and we sat backstage listening to Walter before Sonny took the stage. Sonny really wow'd the crowd !

Robert Cray and his band arrived around 3:30. Mrs. LMN is a BIG fan of his and was thrilled to actually meet him. He turned in his usual stellar performance !

Halfway through Robert's set, the Sun finally made an appearance, so we made our way over to the Main Stage to find a seat for the Who.

They were FANTASTIC !! Daltrey was in good voice and Pete did about a thousand Windmills as they worked their way through the songbook, backed up by Simon Townshend on vocals (Pete's brother) and Zak Starky on Drums (Ringo's kid !). They did 'My Generation', ' Magic Bus', and a medley from 'Tommy'. Roger did about 3 good Harp solos and they played with the crowd as Townshend started up 'Kids are Alright' only to be interrupted by Daltrey who informed him that it wasn't on the Playlist. Pete said:" Not on the menu eh..?? That's all right, Sh*t happens. Who gives a Sh*t? " They closed with 'Won't Get Fooled Again' with Pete signing off : "Not bad for a bunch of noisy old farts"

Big Sam's Funky Nation was a lot of fun as always and the Rock N Bowl a great venue.

After the show, we went to Snake & Jakes Christmas Club Lounge for a few before swinging down Frenchmen Street seeing a couple late-nite acts b4 turning in.

Today is maybe the least attractive lineup of this year's JazzFest, so we're gonna get a late start after doing a Bloody Mary Brunch and see Ms. Irma Thomas @3pm, then the Creole String Beans @4:30. The Main Acts are Jimmy Buffet and his Coral Reefer Band and Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga. Not very appealing to us, so we'll likely leave early, go home, shower, relax before heading back to the Rock N Bowl to see Sonny Landreth & Tab Benoit, then over to Chickie Wah Wah for the 22nd Annual Big Blues Harmonica Show w/ Johnny Sansone, Dale Spalding, Benny Maygarden & Johnny Mastro @11pm.

Tomorrow - the House of Blues for WWOZ's annual Piano Night !

cheers!

Damn, you're having too much fun! Sounds like a great time and possibly nearing sensory overload.

Slowly winding down our stay here in NOLA... what a stay it's been !

The 22nd Annual Big Blues Harmonica Show Sunday nite @ Chickie Wah Wah was incredible ! Johnny Sansone and Dale Spalding blew the roof off the joint !

Last nite was the House of Blues for WWOZ's annual benefit - Piano Night. Marcia Ball was great and Ike Stubblefield turned in his usual amazing set, but the wonder of the evening was a 12 y.o. prodigy named Joey Alexander. Born in Bali, he had no access to Jazz except for visiting players on tour, many of whom he was able to jam with. Watch for this kid in the future !

Ran into Corey Duplechin, Tab Benoit's Bass player and had a drink with him. Corey is one of my all-time fav Bass players - watch him here w/ Tab and you'll see why:

He plays Bass like it was Lead Guitar !

Anyway, Corey wanted to know if we were staying Friday to see Samantha Fish, that he'd introduce us!

We had planned on leaving tomorrow, and Mrs. LMN must - she has to get to Sawgrass in Ponte Vedre for the Players Championship happening in 10 days (Day Job).

But, it occurred to me that the house we use is still vacant, and I've got the whole week clear, since Mrs. LMN is a Platinum member at Delta Air Lines, I can change my flight for free. So... much to her chagrin, I'm staying in New Orleans until Saturday and going Friday to a crawfish boil and then the show both w/ Corey !

Corey also introduced us to Munnie Jordan, the Executive Director of the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR. She was truly lovely and really dedicated to preserving the Blues in the Delta - in it's 30th year right on the banks of the Mississippi. Munnie comforted Mrs. LMN saying that Samantha Fish is scheduled to perform at King Biscuit and they both hit it off so well, that she's invited us to the Festival in October as her guest VIPs for all 3 days - so, we've got that going for us !

Today's gonna be a quiet one, we're visiting our friend Vince Guidroz at his shop - New Orleans Guitar Co. this afternoon and then Mrs. LMN and I are having dinner at Commanders Palace and nightcaps at the Buffa Lounge, turning in early, as Mrs. LMN has an 11am flight to Jacksonville tmw.

cheers!
