Sounds like fun, but I'm a single Dad - wouldn't work for me.

We cruise quite bit. IMHO: The show bands are composed of highly, skilled, multifaceted players. If you have no experience 'cutting shows', working off lead sheets, and sight-reading easily, it's not your gig. As for the other combos, if you have your own style and playlist, and are not going find yourself being obliged to call upon the kind of skills I alluded to at the outset, you might have a shot at it. Another one of us has also done a cruise.

I'd be interested in Mike's take on this.

All that and more, for example, depending on what company you work for, you may be assigned duties such as port manning (where you are basically on watch and greeting guests) to entertainment productions on the ship. There is also likely to be a clause in your contract –– a “need clause” –– stating that in an emergency, you may be asked to perform additional duties as needed.

Working as a musician on a cruise ship can be frustrating due to the diverse knowledge of the musicians. The overpublished number of lead sheets and books like “The Real Fakebook,” “The Real Really Really Real Book,” and the “Standard of Standards” have made things overly complicated for jam sessions. Musicians from different countries have tunes memorized in different keys and have learned those from different publishers.

If you plan to play music on a ship, bring a RealBook –– and I mean the one known as the RealBook (all of you music students reading this will know what I am talking about).

You’re likely to read over 200 charts a week and rehearsals for guest entertainers are only an hour and a half long for a 45-minute show. You need to be able to read down music, scoring at least a “B” average or better (i.e., 80% or higher) to keep your performing skills compatible with other musicians. Continuous mistakes will lead to disciplinary action based on what company you work for, and could lead to termination of the contract and being blacklisted from being hired for awhile or forever.

It's not for everyone, but an experience worth trying if you like "adventure" lol.

Lastly, the $$$ is very good but the paperwork you need to fill out
is almost like applying for FAFSA!

I think that forum member "Strings10927" has also done these as we've both
worked a similiar circuit at different times including backing a slew of
older pop singers.

Good on ya, Mike for posting those job leads.

I don't think I qualify (I know I don't, having grown up just blocks from cruise ships).

The last time I played on a ship was when the crew built and presented me with bongos out of 2 large commercial vegetable cans with the bottoms cut out and then joined by a bolt. It was the Cold War 60s and we were crossing the Atlantic; so to pass the time we formed a band on the WW II Canadian frigate Swansea.

At times a cruise ship from nowhere in sight would pass us by going in the opposite direction. It was an exciting time to see passengers looking and waving as we did too, because many days and nights would pass without seeing a stranger.

No cruise ship takers for our shipboard band back then either. At least our crew didin't jettison us overboard.

What does "read down music" mean? How is it scored?

There is this one cruise ship musician featured in the PBS "NOVA" episode titled "Why Ships Sink" because two different cruise ships he was hired onto SANK out from under him and he survived both incidents. You can watch the episode and see his accounts of both sinkings here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/tech/why-ships-sink.html

Bon Voyage!

Remember the band on Titanic. They stayed to the last and were lost. Ship's engineers wear a purple stripe on their uniforms in memory of those engineers who stayed to the last and were lost. Perhaps musicians on cruise ships should do the same.
